Traffic on Tornio bridge to be cut off on 3 September 2025 at 6:00 am and reinstated on 6 September 2025 at 6:00 am – the interruption will cause significant disruptions for heavy traffic

The renovation of the bridge over Tornionjoki on Highway 29 (E4) is proceeding as planned. The repair project for the bridge, which is in poor condition, began in April 2025. The project will see the deck structure of the bridge be replaced in two different stages during 2025 and 2026. The renovation will result in exceptional traffic arrangements.

For the duration of the concrete casting of the deck structure, from 6:00 am on 3 September 2025 to 6:00 am on 6 September 2025, bridge traffic will be cut off in its entirety. The reason for the traffic interruption is the space required by concrete equipment, allowing concrete the time to harden, and ensuring traffic and occupational safety.

For the duration of the traffic interruption, vehicles weighing less than 12 tonnes, public transport and emergency vehicles will be directed to the Hannula bridge nearby.

The traffic interruption will cause significant disruptions for heavy traffic. The detour of vehicles weighing more than 12 tons will run along Highway 21 and in Ylitornio via the Aavasaksa border bridge on Highway 98, which will mean that the detour will be more than 150 km long. The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Lapland has asked road users for understanding concerning the disruptions resulting from the bridge closure.

The Swedish Transport Agency Trafikverket is responsible for providing guidance and information on the detour on Sweden’s side of the border.

The project’s main contractor is GRK Suomi Oy, and the project is being co-financed by the EU under the CEF Connecting Europe Facility.
