On Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, a global milestone for the electrification of transport was achieved as one of the first known public megawatt charging sessions was carried out in Sweden using the official MCS charging communication protocol.

Kempower’s distributed charging system charged simultaneously with 864kW, using both CCS and MCS to charge two Scania trucks. A power peak of 728kW was obtained through the MCS charging point with the Kempower Mega Satellite, using the MCS, while simultaneously charging the second truck with CCS, using the standard Kempower Satellite. Both charging satellites were connected to a 1.2 MW Kempower Power Unit. The charging session also demonstrated a successful integration of megawatt-scale power into the energy system in a way that optimizes electricity from the grid, the battery energy storage system, and solar.

The Megawatt Charging System framework, defined by CharIN consortium, to standardize charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, has seen many developments during the last years. Kempower now successfully carried out a public MCS charging session according to the official MCS standard, hitting a new charging peak seen on the market. With this milestone trucks can now start to charge at megawatt power levels, enabling a fully charged truck within the truck drivers’ regulatory 45-minute breaks.

With the EU targeting to reduce emissions from heavy-duty vehicles by 45% by 2030, compared to 2021 levels, the adoption of electric trucks and a sufficient infrastructure is critical. Last-mile and mid-range trucks are already a reality in many places in Europe. Completing the MCS ensures the compatibility of charging infrastructure and trucks, and enables the electrification of the last and most challenging truck electrification segment, the long-haul trips, with the biggest charging needs and the shortest available charging windows.

Alfredsson’s truck depot in Norrköping is a first-of-its-kind deployment, where the owner, Erik Alfredsson, has optimized his site for both his own electric trucks, as well as a public offering to other haulage companies, helping to enable long-haulage electric truck deliveries across the length of Sweden. During the first real-life charging session communication tests with an MCS-equipped Scania truck, the truck enabled a charging power that peaked at 728kW. As electric trucks’ power capacities continue to increase, Kempower’s distributed charging system can continue to grow the power through a single charging point to up to 1.2 MW.

With the Kempower Mega Satellite connected to Kempower’s distributed charging system, Erik Alfredsson can make the most out of his investment already today. The distributed system dynamically splits the 1.2 MW of power with MCS and CCS charging points. With Kempower’s ChargEye software, Alfredsson can according to emerging needs, further define prioritization to selected trucks to ensure that MCS-equipped trucks will always be fully charged within the drivers’ breaks.

To balance the grid connection and reduce reliance on peak demand, the depot is supplemented by Polarium’s 1.2 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a 400kWp solar PV park. The system is optimized by Kempower’s Energy Management System (EMS), unlocking multiple value streams. Through the Energy Management System, Alfredsson can reduce the dependency on costly grid upgrades but also shaving power price peaks by supplying power from the BESS. By maximizing the use of locally generated solar energy, Alfredsson can cut emissions and costs simultaneously. The EMS also allows energy market participation, enabling new revenue streams and reducing operating costs.

”We are very thankful for the collaboration with all involved parties, especially Erik Alfredsson, for paving the way for the future of truck charging. Truck customers can be confident, knowing that we work strongly with the industry to make sure that Kempower chargers grow with their needs, combining the currently used CCS standard with megawatt charging, enabling a fully electric transport sector,” says Jussi Vanhanen, Chief Markets Officer at Kempower.

“This is a historic moment – Our MCS Scania truck charging with Kempower at 1000A at Erik Alfredsson’s public truck depot in Norrköping. This brings electric transport to a completely new height. Now long-distance electric transports can become reality with fully charged trucks within the statutory 45-minute breaks,” says Joakim Gimholt, Chief Engineer Charging & Power Distribution at Traton.

“As a haulage company we need to plan our needs for the future, to be able to offer low-emission transports to our customers, while having a functioning solution already today. With the current setup, we can fulfill our own charging needs, while also helping trucks on their way through Sweden, by offering a public charging stop for trucks. We hope that this inspires the transport industry worldwide – The electrification of transport is a reality, the question is, if you are ready for the shift,” comments Erik Alfredsson, CEO and owner of Alfredsson Transport.
