DNA’s 5G network already covers 190 towns – Kivijärvi, Kuhmoinen, Laitila, Soini, Uurainen and Ähtäri are the latest additions

The 5G network currently covers the following districts of the newest 5G towns:

• Kivijärvi, Central Finland: The 5G network covers the areas directly north of Kivijärvi parish village, around Puralankylä. The network will expand to cover the eastern and western parts of the municipality before the end of the year.
• Kuhmoinen, Pirkanmaa: The 5G network covers the entire area of Kuhmoinen village, Papinsaari and parts of their immediate vicinities.
• Laitila, Southwest Finland: The 5G network already covers several square kilometres to the northeast of the town’s central urban district. The central district will also gain comprehensive 5G coverage in November/December when four new base stations are opened.
• Soini, South Ostrobothnia: The 5G network now opened in the municipality covers Raitaperä, Pirttiperä, Parviaisenkylä and their immediate vicinities.
• Uurainen, Central Finland: The 5G network already covers the whole area of Uurainen village, and the network also extends into the nearby areas within a radius of 3–5 kilometres from the village.
• Ähtäri, South Ostrobothnia: The newly built 5G network already covers a wide area, starting from the southwestern parts of Ähtäri’s central conurbation, the area around the railway line, and continues 5–8 kilometres to the southwest.

More than one frequency may be used in the same area, and your mobile device will usually select the best option automatically. You can also view ongoing network upgrades by selecting Verkon parannustyöt in the left-hand menu. The map is updated at a slight delay, so the latest upgrades may not yet be visible.

DNA has been building a 5G network that can operate in both the lower 700-megahertz and higher 3.5-gigahertz frequency bands around Finland. Lower frequencies offer a fast connection that is more than sufficient for normal Internet use and allow the network to cover a large area with good indoor coverage. Higher frequencies, on the other hand, offer gigabit-class connection speeds with minimal delay over a smaller coverage area. Lower frequencies are typically used in rural areas and less densely populated urban areas, whereas higher frequencies are used in more densely populated urban areas.

“Kivijärvi, Kuhmoinen, Laitila, Soini, Uurainen and Ähtäri all have 5G networks operating mainly in the 700-megahertz frequency band. This has enabled us to provide comprehensive indoor coverage with a large footprint, which will get even bigger as time passes. The construction of the 5G network also has the effect of updating the entire mobile network, as it requires old base stations to be replaced with new ones. This means faster 4G speeds and an improved user experience in the areas where the network is being modernised,” says Jarkko Laari, VP, Radio Networks at DNA.

In many cases, 5G also offers an excellent alternative to fixed-network broadband at home, so the completion of the network boosts the area’s competitiveness and expands consumers’ options for internet services. A suitable device and subscription are needed to use 5G services.
