IQM:n kvanttitietokonekeskukselle 35 miljoonan euron laina EIP:ltä
Euroopan investointipankki (EIP) on myöntänyt IQM Quantum Computers -yritykselle 35 miljoonan euron lainan tukemaan sen kvanttiprosessorien kehittämistä ja kaupallistamista. Prosessorit valmistetaan yrityksen Espoon toimipisteessä, joka on Euroopan ensimmäinen kvanttiteknologiaan erikoistunut tuotantolaitos. Laina on yksi Euroopan takuurahaston venture debt -rahoitustuotteista, joilla pyritään parantamaan koronapandemiasta kärsineiden pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten maksuvalmiutta.

Lisäksi IQM sai EIP:n rahoitushakemuksen valmisteluun tukea pankin neuvontapalveluista.
IQM ilmoitti Espoon tuotantolaitoksensa avaamisesta marraskuussa. EIP:n lainan ensimmäinen erä käytetään laitoksen laajentamiseen, materiaalitutkimuksen vauhdittamiseen sekä kvanttiprosessorien kehittämiseen.
Ensimmäistä EIP-lainaa vastaanottaessaan IQM:n toimitusjohtaja Jan Goetz sanoi: ”Vallitseva sirupula on tuonut esiin maailman riippuvuuden Aasian puolijohdevalmistajista. Kvanttiprosessorien avulla voimme ottaa tästä oppia kehittyäksemme ensin omavaraisiksi ja sitten globaaleiksi kvanttisirujen toimittajiksi. EIP:n laina auttaa meitä rakentamaan Eurooppaan entistä tasapainoisempaa ja muutosjoustavampaa kvanttiteollisuutta. Teemme jo nyt työtä Euroopan edistyneimmän kvanttiteknologian parissa, ja tämä laina auttaa meitä luomaan uuden sukupolven täysin eurooppalaisen kvanttiekosysteemin.”
EIP:n pääjohtaja Werner Hoyer sanoi: ”Kvanttilaskenta on vielä alkuasteella. Jatkossa se voi kuitenkin mullistaa monia aloja aina lääke- ja rokotekehityksestä kyberturvallisuuteen. IQM:n kaltaisten yritysten riittävän rahoituksen takaaminen on avainasemassa, kun haluamme kehittää Euroopasta maailmanlaajuisen teknologiajohtajan.”

Rahoitusuutisten lisäksi IQM on ollut julkisuudessa kvanttiprosessorien suunnitteluun tarkoitetun, avoimen lähdekoodin KQCircuits-ohjelmistotyökalun kehittäjänä, supertehokkaiden tietojenkäsittelykeskusten (HPC) kvanttilaskentaa nopeuttavan Q-Exa-hankkeen toteuttajana sekä kvanttituotantolaitoksen perustajana. Rahoituksen avulla IQM pystyy hallitsemaan kvanttiprosessorien kehitystä ja lujittamaan alansa eurooppalaista johtajuutta.

Euroopan investointipankki (EIP) on pitkäaikaisia lainoja myöntävä Euroopan unionin rahoituslaitos, jonka omistavat EU:n jäsenvaltiot. Se antaa pitkäaikaista rahoitusta terveen liiketoiminnan edellytykset täyttäviin investointeihin, jotka edistävät EU:n toimintapoliittisten päämäärien toteutumista.

IQM valmistaa Suomen ensimmäistä kaupallista 54-kubittista kvanttitietokonetta yhdessä VTT:n kanssa. Lisäksi IQM:n johtama konsortio Q-Exa on rakentamassa kvanttitietokonetta Saksaan. Tietokone integroidaan suuren suorituskyvyn supertietokoneympäristöön vauhdittamaan tulevaa tieteellistä tutkimusta. IQM:llä on yli 160 työntekijää ja toimipisteet Pariisissa, Bilbaossa, Münchenissä ja Espoossa.
