IXONOS CREATES & OPERATES IN-CAR DIGITAL CONTENT STORE FOR HONDA – Future-proof connectivity and access to safe in-car apps via cloud

HELSINKI, FINLAND – Ixonos, the creative technology company, delivers a cloud-based in-car digital content store for Honda based on the Ixonos Experience Store™. Known as the App Center, the service will run on Honda’s new Android head unit as a standard feature on all new Honda vehicles sold across Europe starting in 2015. Media and consumers will get a first look at the combination at the Paris Motorshow in October.

Ixonos Experience Store for Automotive™ is a variant of our white-label e-commerce platform, designed and developed specifically to meet the needs of customers in the transportation & automotive industry. It is a customisable solution for distributing digital content, such as certified applications and services designed according to non-distraction guidelines. It also enables technology updates for head units and related digital accessories to be downloaded to head units.

“The new Android head unit enables Honda to secure its position as the forerunner in IVI technology. We are proud to be able to set the scene for the development of future-proof digital services for cars. Our solution enables Honda users to always have the latest software solutions and innovations in their vehicles,” explains Roope Suomalainen, head of media at Ixonos.

For Honda’s App Center, we customised the user interface according to Honda’s design guidelines and created localised versions for 26 European languages. Throughout the development work, we kept a heightened focus on user experience and driver-distraction factors. The content store will operate on top of Ixonos’ virtual private cloud platform, hosted by Ixonos’ dedicated service teams.   

“We’re delivering the content store together with a safe e-payment solution, operated by PayPal. This enables not just hassle-free app purchases, but in the future drivers can also take care of parking fees and road toll very conveniently”, Tony Grubb, Director, Business Development, Ixonos UK, points out.

The content store opens up new digital business opportunities for Honda. The company will be able to engage drivers on a deeper level and provide innovations that enhance the driving experience. The whole ecosystem progresses as third-party app developers get a channel to bring out their services. The development of whole new categories of specifically car-related services, such as car-pooling and smart parking, should speed up and thrive. In the end, the drivers reap the greatest harvest: Their cars will stay technologically up-to-date and connected and they will be able to enjoy a whole host of new services.
