Minister for Foreign Affairs Haavisto visiting The Hague, Montana and Brussels

Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto visited The Hague on Wednesday and will next travel to Montana in the United States. On Monday, he will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

On Wednesday 13 July, Foreign Minister Affairs Haavisto attended in The Hague a ministerial conference convened by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Criminal Court (ICC). The conference discussed questions of legal responsibility for the war in Ukraine. Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba joined in the discussions via remote connection. In addition to the ministers’ discussion, Minister Haavisto met ICC President Piotr Hofmánski, ICC Registrar Peter Lewis, Deputy Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Odette Melono, and ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.

On Thursday 14 July, Minister Haavisto travels from The Hague to Montana in the United States where he will attend a seminar on foreign and security policy and meet decision-makers and media representatives to discuss Finland’s NATO membership process.

On Monday 18 July, Minister Haavisto will attend the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. The Foreign Affairs Council will continue the discussion on Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. The ministers will especially focus on the geopolitical impacts of Russia’s aggression and on accountability issues. Finland strongly condemns Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Finland responds to Russia’s actions as part of the EU.

The foreign ministers will also discuss the relations between the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean. They will exchange views on pursuing closer relations and stronger political contacts. Finland sees the value of increasing interaction with Latin America and the Caribbean and supports the EU’s efforts to deepen relations.

In addition, the ministers will discuss the external dimension of digital diplomacy. Finland places great importance on developing and strengthening the EU’s digital diplomacy as part of the EU’s external relations and security policy. Finland supports the EU’s role in building a responsible, safe and free digital future.

Enligt den av Finlands ambassad i Moskva beställda enkätundersökningen förhåller sig en dryg tredjedel av de ryssar som svarade på enkäten positivt till Finland. För ett år sedan uppgav ungefär hälften att de är positiva till Finland. Enligt enkätundersökningen har Finlands rykte försämrats främst av att ryska medier har gett en felaktig och negativ bild av Finlands Natomedlemskap. Ungdomarnas inställningar till Finland är positivare.
