The new exhibition of the Museum of the University of Helsinki opens up on the 27th March
“The Power of Thought – the story of the University of Helsinki 1640−2015” is an exhibition about students, researchers, and the arts and sciences. It tells the fascinating story of Finland's oldest university, the University of Helsinki, from its establishment as the Royal Academy of Turku in 1640 to the present day. The exhibition’s humorous short films bring students from four different eras to life. What has changed in 375 years – or has anything?
– In the exhibition we focus on eveyday matters that mean something to us all. People have always partied, become bored, excited and dreamt about girl or boy friends. Basically student life has always been the same, says Exhibition's Manager Pia Vuorikoski.
In addition to Runeberg, Snellman, Porthan, and other illustrious alumni, the story features students, Master’s graduates, and those who never graduated but found a spiritual home for their careers at the University. The running theme of the exhibition is the University's position as a social force.
The exhibition includes a broad range of museum pieces, from microscope to corset, from the University’s founding charter to dormitory furniture, and from imperial portraits to the computer used by Linus Torvalds.
The exhibition will open on Friday, 27 March 2015. Free entry, Mon-Fri 12.00–18.00, Sat 12.00–16.00, Fabianinkatu 33, 3rd floor, new side of the University of Helsinki Main Building.
From civil servants to a multidisciplinary research university
The Swedish Empire needed government officials for all parts of its dominion. For this reason, universities were established in 1640 in every region of the kingdom: Uppsala, Sweden; Dorpat (Tartu), Estonia; and Turku, Finland. A month after its establishment, the new university was found to have 44 students, most of whom had been recruited from Sweden.
More than two centuries later, in 1853, student Julius Krohn writes to his mother about how handsome he looks in his uniform jacket, a compulsory part of university life at the time, and a way to supervise the students.
While the uniforms are now gone, student caps are still in use; and the University today is the academic home to a somewhat larger contingent of 35,000 students. The University of Helsinki is internationally ranked among the 100 best universities.
Welcome!
