BRAND NEW SHARK NURSERY IN SEA LIFE

SEA LIFE in Helsinki is celebrating shark week’s 10.–25.10.2009. The shark weeks will remind all the visitors of the importance of the unique animals – sharks. Sharks have ruled the oceans for more than 400 million years. To honour the shark weeks Sea Life has opened a brand new shark nursery. The nursery makes it easier to breed sharks. The goal is to breed 20 cloudy cat sharks to be sent to other Sea Life centers in Europe.

 
Sea Life is celebrating the shark week at the same time with the European Shark Week that is led by the Shark Alliance. Aquariums, dive groups and conservation organisations in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Malta, Spain, France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, Ireland and Portugal will host events to demonstrate public support for better safeguards for sharks, including a stronger EU ban on “finning” (the wasteful practice of slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea). 

The ever-increasing interest in European Shark Week is bringing unprecedented opportunities to raise awareness and concern about sharks. The aim is to not only educate people about the sharks’ plight, but to also inspire them to help secure the solutions that now lie within our grasp.

SOS Sharks - predator turned pray - how can we help save the sharks. Extra material from the Shark Alliance.
-  By the rock pool you can touch and feel shark eggs and shark skin.
-  Shark crafts
-  Sharks quiz, fossil finder surprises and Huggy Sharks mascot - children's favourite
-  Night of the fish 17.11. SEA LIFE will close at 23.00.
-  Sonja Fordham from Shark Alliance will come and tell us about the sharks in the
     Baltic Sea 21.10. at 3 pm and 6 pm.

SEA LIFE is open during the shark weeks: 12.-18.10: 10.00-21.00, 19.10-25.10:10.00-17.00 and Wed. 10-20.00
