Finland's biggest boating event, the 2011 Helsinki International Boat Show, launches the new season at the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre on Friday 11 February 2011. The first day of the fair used to be open only to the media and industry professionals, but the doors will now be opened to members of the general public from 3pm to 7pm. The Boat Show continues until Sunday 20 Feb.
All of the industry's most significant players will land at the Boat Show. About 550 boats will once again be on display, including an impressive exhibition of some 30 sailboats. In addition to boats, visitors can review a comprehensive selection of boating supplies and electronics as well as look at exhibitions of archipelago life, travel, diving and fishing. In all, 340 exhibitors are participating in this boating extravaganza.
Underwater world at your reach

Did you know that you can experiment with scuba diving at the Boat Show? Professional PADI instructors will introduce visitors to the intriguing underwater world at the Swimmers' Pool in Hall 2. Everything has been made most convenient for the visitor – they are provided with dressing rooms and a complete set of diving gear, including a wetsuit.  The pool is also the venue for diving and rescue demonstrations as well as racing with radio-controlled sailboats.
In addition to this splashing good time, divers can look forward to interesting programme items at the Ballroom lecture facility. All visitors are welcome to the Wreck Diving Seminar, which takes place from 3pm to 7pm Saturday 12 February. Among other things, this joint PADI, National Board of Antiquities and Finnish Divers' Federation seminar presents shipwrecks in the Gulf of Finland and looks at diving around wrecked warships.

Ahoy! Little skippers on deck!

Boating is above all a great hobby for the whole family and the Boat Show provides the youngest family members with a safe opportunity to get a feel for this noble pastime using the Sailing Maker simulator. Wee skippers can practice their skills further on the Finnish Sailing and Boating Association's optimist dinghy at the children's pool. On weekends, parents can leave their 2-7-year-old children under supervision at the free-of-charge Kid's Spot, where they can keep busy by participating in drawing competitions, for example.

Boating awards and recognitions

Laser Radial class world champion Sari Multala will be present on the opening day to hand over the Finnish Association of Boating Journalists recognition prize for the Boating Act of the Year 2010. The HIBS 2011 Jury will also reveal its candidates for the Best Motorboat of the Fair and the Best Sailboat of the Fair prizes on Friday 11 Feb. The winning boats will be announced on Wednesday 16 Feb.
On  Saturday 12 Feb, Hannu Laine, General Secretary of the International Council of Cruising Yachts, will present the Longest Distance Cup 2010 challenge trophy to Kees Bos of the Mariners Motor Yacht Club. The Boat Show will also award the Best Boating Product of the Year; visitors can vote for their favourite listed product at the southern entrance. Voting ends at 6pm Friday 18 Feb and the prize will be handed out on Saturday 19 Feb.
