DNA and Netflix join forces – a world-first cooperation starts in Finland

Teleoperator DNA is starting a globally unique cooperation project with the streaming service Netflix. DNA will become the first operator in the world to combine a home broadband connection and a four-screen Netflix subscription in the same one order and invoice.

Going forward, DNA’s broadband connection and Netflix’s four-screen 4K family subscription will be available in one package deal. This arrangement is a world-first for Netflix: the streaming giant has never bundled its family subscription with an operator’s broadband service.

According to Pekka Väisänen, DNA’s Senior Vice President, Consumer Business, the companies have been working together towards the joint product launch since the beginning of this year. The goal is to improve the level of user experience by offering high-quality content on high-speed broadband.

“The digital world is fragmenting, as content is being distributed into different streaming services. People, however, value ease of use above all else in their consumption of entertainment. According to our survey*, for example, three out of four the respondents want to watch TV shows, sports and other TV programs regardless of the showtime, and just as many respondents think that it is important that all content is available conveniently in one place. This is why we prefer open ecosystems that combine quality and speed in a user-friendly format. Netflix is by far the most popular paid streaming service in Finland, and their own application is already available on DNA Hubi”, Väisänen says regarding the background of their cooperation.

Patrick Danckwardt, Head of Business Development Netflix Nordics comments the cooperation: "We are super excited about taking our long term partnership with DNA and Telenor to a new level. The combination of amazing Netflix content in 4K with DNA's superfast broadband creates a unique and innovative product that really brings joy to our members and makes access to our service even more convenient."

DNA’s broadband is the fastest in Netflix’s tests

Netflix measures the service quality and speeds of operators in various countries as people view content on the service, and DNA’s broadband was the winner in the Finnish tests**.

“Our research shows that the DNA Netti broadband is the fastest network connection for watching Netflix, which makes these two the perfect match in terms of user experience. The speed means that the image will not cut out or pixelate, and the entire family can enjoy the content on several devices at the same time. This cooperation is built on consumer friendliness: when buying DNA Netti and Netflix together, the customer gets a discount. We have also made it as easy as possible to subscribe and pay, as you can place your order from one place and pay subscription fees on the same invoice”, Väisänen says.

*) The Digitaaliset elämäntavat (Digital Habits) survey was commissioned by DNA and conducted by Nepa Insight Oy. Data collection was carried out in Nepa’s online panel at the end of March 2020. Number of respondents n=1036. The respondents were a representative sample based on age and gender of Finns aged 16–74.

**) Based on Netflix ISP Speed Index results from Finnish internet service providers in February 2020. Netflix ISP Speed Index is a benchmark used to measure the speed of a specific internet service provider when viewing Netflix during prime time. It does not measure the speed of other services or other data transfer on the service provider’s network. Netflix’s country-specific indices are available at ispspeedindex.netflix.com. DNA:n käyttämä 5G-verkko yltää nyt Etelä-Karjalassa liki joka kolkkaan11.4.2024 09:55:00 EEST | Tiedote

DNA:n käyttämän 5G-verkon rakennustyöt Etelä-Karjalassa ovat saavuttaneet pisteen, jossa 5G-verkon peitto yltää maakunnassa liki kaikkialle ja asukkaiden tavoittavuus lähestyy 100 prosentin tasoa heidän asuinpaikkojensa perusteella. Koko maan tasolla kuuluvuudessa on kuitenkin yhä alueellista vaihtelua, minkä vuoksi verkkoa parannetaan jatkuvasti. Tavoite on erityisesti maantieteellisen peiton vahvistaminen ja kasvattaminen. Laskennallisesti 5G-verkko tavoittaa noin 96 prosenttia suomalaisista koko maassa, yhteensä yli 250 paikkakunnalla. 5G-rakentamisen myötä paranevat myös 4G-yhteydet.

DNA’s 5G network now reaches almost every corner of South Karelia11.4.2024 09:55:00 EEST | Press release

DNA’s 5G network in South Karelia now reaches nearly all parts of the region, and coverage of the population is approaching 100% based on residents’ location. At the national level, however, there are still regional variations in coverage, which is why the network is constantly being improved. In particular, DNA’s goal is to reinforce and increase geographic coverage. The 5G network has a theoretical coverage of around 96% of Finland’s population in more than 250 localities. The construction of 5G infrastructure also improves 4G connections.
