Omnitele’s research report (in Finnish) was published today, and it is attached to this press release.
“DNA’s customers use the most mobile data in the world*, which is why we work hard to ensure that even the connections they use are fast. Measurements and tests are an excellent way to ensure this. I am pleased to say that, with the construction of the 5G network, the average data transfer speeds have clearly improved for all operators, and the highest average speed of incoming traffic was achieved with a DNA subscription in Omnitele’s measurement,” says Vice President, Mobile Business Cedric Kamtsan, from DNA.
DNA’s network achieved the average download speed of 313 Mbps from the base station to the mobile device. Elisa’s subscription achieved the second highest speed of 267 Mbps, while Telia came in third place with 215 Mbps. The results of Omnitele’s measurement and the order of the operators’ results varied by city and location**.
In terms of user experience, the download speed of incoming traffic is one of the most important indicators, as most of the traffic in mobile networks is typically directed specifically from the base station to the user. The faster the connection, the faster websites, videos and other content will load. The recommended minimum speed for viewing HD-quality video is 5 Mbps, while a speed of at least 25 Mbps is typically recommended for seamless playback of Ultra-HD (4K) video.
“Fast internet is one of the most important basic prerequisites of everyday life today. Particularly because of the exceptional circumstances this year, people have kept in touch much more through video calls and apps. At the same time, a high-speed internet also makes it easier to use cloud services. The popularity of streaming services also continues to grow, and content is of even higher resolution than before. The internet must therefore function flawlessly,” Kamtsan says.
Omnitele’s study compared three large Finnish operators: DNA, Elisa and Telia. The fastest consumer subscription of each operator was selected for the test. The measurements were conducted with advanced smartphones that are able to utilise 5G networks. The measurements were carried out in November–December 2020, and the study covered the ten largest Finnish cities. In total, more than 40 per cent of Finland’s population live in these cities. The cities were Helsinki, Espoo, Tampere, Vantaa, Oulu, Turku, Jyväskylä, Lahti, Kuopio and Pori.
DNA’s 5G network coverage area covers more than 1.6 million people in nearly 80 municipalities already, and more network is constructed constantly. Coverage map of DNA’s 5G network and additional information is available at www.dna.fi/5G.

**) Omnitele’s study on data transfer speeds in mobile networks, 11/2020. The study was carried out in the ten largest cities in Finland. The results are based on the average data transfer speeds of incoming traffic (from the base station to the terminal device) in the measurements. The study results and ranking of the operators varied between the cities and locations. The different cities had rather significant variations in the average download speeds, and the extent of the 5G coverage varied relatively much from city to city. The study was carried out with the operators’ fastest 5G consumer subscriptions and smartphones with 5G.
