Join us in finding out who is the winner of Finland’s most prestigious visual arts award. The winner has been selected from a shortlist of candidates by Anne Barlow, Director of the Tate St Ives. The press conference will be attended by Barlow, the winner of the award, and Leena Niemistö, chair of the competition jury. The press conference will take place on Wednesday, 22 November 2023, at 14:00 (UTC+2) in the Seminar Room at Kiasma. The award ceremony can also be attended online. Be sure to register for the event by 20 November by email to KiasmaTiedotus@kiasma.fi

The Henna and Pertti Niemistö Art Foundation – ARS FENNICA sr presents Finland’s most important visual arts prize every other year. The prize of 50,000 euros is awarded to the winner in recognition of distinctive artistic output of high merit.

The candidates for the 2023 Ars Fennica prize are Henni Alftan and Tuomas A. Laitinen of Finland, Lap-See Lam of Sweden, Camille Norment of Norway, and Emilija Škarnulytė of Lithuania. The candidates and the international art expert choosing the winner are selected by a panel of experts appointed by the foundation.

A joint exhibition of the nominees’ work will be on display at Kiasma until 28 January 2024. The exhibition is produced jointly by Kiasma and the Henna and Pertti Niemistö Art Foundation – ARS FENNICA sr.

The Finnish National Gallery is the national museum of fine arts. It operates three of Finland’s best-known museums: the Ateneum Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum. It also manages the national art collection and its archives, develops Finnish cultural heritage and promotes art to the wider public.

På skulptören Edith Karlsons utställning möter besökaren fyra meter höga jättar, ett skelett som bildar en båge över salen och en armé som rider mot sitt oundvikliga öde. Fåglar och andra djur blickar tyst tillbaka på oss. Sjöjungfrur som vilar sig vid en källa har stigit upp ur vattnet för att vittna om vad människan har gjort mot havet och jorden. Linnut ja muut eläimet tuijottavat hiljaisina vastaan. Kaivon äärellä lepäilevät merenneidot ovat nousseet vedestä todistamaan, mitä ihminen on merelle ja maalle tehnyt. Näyttely avautuu Kiasmassa huomenna perjantaina 17.4.2026.
