Elisa and DNA Tower team up to strengthen Finland’s energy transition with Distributed Energy Storage solution on the infrastructure services
16.2.2024 10:00:00 EET | DNA Oyj | Press release
DNA Tower Finland, a company building and maintaining the mobile network infrastructure in Finland, is to join Elisa in using its Distributed Energy Storage (DES) solution. DES enables operators to optimize their electricity costs using back-up battery capacity, while also strengthening network resilience and supporting electricity grids in their transition to more variable renewable energy sources.

Elisa and DNA Tower Finland, part of Telenor Group, announced today that they are to join forces to support the energy transition as DNA Tower is planning the roll-out of Elisa’s Distributed Energy Storage solution in its equipment spaces.
DES enables the service participants to play a key part in tackling climate change by storing surplus energy in the back up battery capacity of mobile networks, thereby offering the potential to reduce carbon emissions by providing flexibility in their acquisition and usage of energy. The solution also offers participants substantial economic benefits. Using DES participants not only optimize own electricity procurement but can also develop new revenue streams through energy reserve market participation.
“DNA Tower is committed to acting responsibly in a way that enables a better world for future generations. Introducing DES to our networks will allow us to ensure that we make the best use of green energy. It also increases the resilience of our network,” says Antti Koskinen, CEO of DNA Tower Finland.
“There’s no competition in the fight against climate change and we’re very proud to be working with DNA Tower on this project. We’ve proven the functionality of the solution in our networks in Finland and Estonia. DES is really a win-win for operators as it can help them to bring their energy costs down as well as provide value to society. We’re looking forward to welcoming others in using the solution,” says Henri Korpi, Executive Vice President of International Digital Services at Elisa.
By transforming the batteries used to back up the equipment into a virtual power plant, an AI-powered DES system enables so-called load-shifting. This enables the purchase of electricity from the grid during low-cost periods and store it for consumption when prices are higher. This power can be distributed throughout the network, or the surplus sold to provide balancing services to local electricity grids, including in the aFFR and FCR markets*.
*) The aFRR is Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve, which is used at certain times of the day to provide balance to the grid, coming onstream within five minutes. The FCR-D is Frequency containment reserve for disturbances, which is used to manage unexpected frequency deviations and be responsive within seconds.
