Experiments in Concretism 6.3.2024–2.3.2025
Experiments in Concretism takes a fresh look at the diversity of concrete art by showcasing works by more than fifty artists from the 1950s to the present day. Selected from the EMMA Collection, the works highlight the formal variety of concretism and the skill with which the featured artists use materials, structures and colours. Presented at EMMA, concretism resonates significantly with the industrial and geometric architecture of the WeeGee building designed by Aarno Ruusuvuori and with Monica Sosnowska’s exhibition An Order Apart which opens at the same time.
Experiments in Concretism celebrates the centenary of Lars-Gunnar “Nubben” Nordström (1924–2014), a pioneer of Finnish concretism, by showcasing the legacy of his work. The works by Elina Autio featured in the show were commissioned by the L-G Nordström Foundation for this exhibition and have been generously donated to the EMMA Collection.
Monika Sosnowska: An Order Apart 6.3.–15.12.2024
The exhibition An Order Apart by Polish sculptor Monika Sosnowska (b. 1972) consists of six large sculptures made from building materials such as steel beams, concrete and rebar. Sosnowska has a special interest in how architecture and space affect people, and how difficult it is to change existing structures. From familiar materials, she creates something completely new by modifying and distorting their original properties and function. Sosnowska’s sculptures establish a holistic presence at EMMA, offering the audience a new perspective on the architecture of the exhibition centre and its history as a printing house.
The exhibition was produced in collaboration with Hauser & Wirth and Foksal Gallery Foundation.
