HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center achieved Magnet® recognition for nursing excellence
22.3.2024 14:51:40 EET | HUS | Press release
American Nurses Credentialing Center ANCC awarded HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center the Magnet® recognition. The recognition proves that the quality of nursing, patient safety, and nurses’ job satisfaction in Comprehensive Cancer Center are measured to be excellent. Comprehensive Cancer Center is currently the second hospital in Europe and the first in the Nordic Countries to achieve Magnet recognition.
The Magnet Hospital® recognizes nursing excellence. It is a research-based quality system that benefits the patients, the nursing staff, and the entire organization. The recognition is awarded for four years at a time. The Magnet in the name represents the force that attracts patients to the hospital due to high-quality nursing and nurses due to good working environment.
“The Magnet recognition proves that the quality of nursing, patient satisfaction, and nurses’ job satisfaction are measured to be excellent in comparison with national and international results. This recognition is a wonderful prize for years of hard work,” says Vuokko Kolhonen, Chief Nursing Officer at Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“It is not a coincidence that Comprehensive Cancer Center’s nurse attraction and retention has been on a high level for years, even despite the exceptional times we’ve had in recent years. I thank our entire nursing staff for their remarkable work for the best of our patients that has now been recognized to be world-class,” says Johanna Mattson, Director of Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Proven high-quality nursing
The Magnet recognition is a framework for nursing throughout HUS. The path towards the Magnet recognition began already in 2014. Preliminary work included developing nursing culture, harmonizing practices, and collecting evidence of high-quality nursing.
The actual application process started with the submission of a preliminary application and the official application. The application had to show that nursing in Comprehensive Cancer Center meets the 50 criteria that are required for the Magnet recognition. In the final stage, ANCC’s evaluation team from the US visited the hospital to make sure that the excellent practices described in the criteria are in use throughout Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“The Magnet recognition is a major achievement for HUS. Comprehensive Cancer Center is the first department at HUS to receive the recognition. Long-term development of nursing in Comprehensive Cancer Center is a fine example to all the other departments that aim to achieve the Magnet recognition,” says Marita Ritmala, HUS Magnet Program Director.
Magnet Hospital® is a recognition awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to hospitals that attract nurses and patients like a magnet. Nursing in a Magnet Hospital is measured to be of high quality, and the nurses are committed professionals who are satisfied in their work. Management is engaging and the structures that support nursing are in order.
