Occupational safety level classifications granted – interest continues to grow through themed days and partnerships
The Vision Zero Forum has once again granted occupational safety level classifications to member workplaces. In this year's application round, 108 workplaces were recognized, of which 48 had zero accidents. Our annual seminar in May will offer another good opportunity to share occupational safety practices by networking.
Finnish Institute of Occupational Health media release 15 April 2024
The growing interest in ratings demonstrates that occupational safety and its development are valued. The Vision Zero Forum has clarified the values on the basis of which the network can work to continuously improve occupational safety. The agreed upon values are openness, learning together and encouraging each other.
“Many workplaces have organized occupational safety themed days and weeks, at which occupational safety is emphasized at workplaces. This is an effective way to promote matters and put them into practice,” says Mika Vallius, Chairman of the Vision Zero Forum steering group.
“The activities demonstrate a desire to learn from others and a positive spirit to encourage others to develop safety.
Partnerships spread the importance of occupational safety
Co-operation plays a key role in the promotion of occupational safety. The forum's member companies have understood safety thinking to be so valuable that they wish to also spread it beyond their own workplace.
“The level classification round has highlighted the enthusiasm to share occupational safety lessons not only between an individual group's various locations, but also between different workplaces that participate in the forum,” says Tiina-Mari Monni, Director of the Vision Zero Forum, Development Manager at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
“Co-operation and openness are reflected in the fact that the workplaces have jointly drawn up safety ground rules. In addition to company locations, occupational safety development covers subcontracting chains and networks of contractors.
Safety ground rules put safety first
The safety ground rules, the Life Saving Rules, have gained ground more widely in member companies. They ensure a common understanding and desire to prioritize safety thinking in practical work.
At the heart of the forum's activities is Vision Zero, a concept that represents a long-term commitment and positive attitude to promoting work, safety, health and well-being. The forum already has more than 550 member companies.
“All workplaces are welcome as members. At member workplaces, improving occupational safety is a continuous activity regardless of the initial level,” Monni emphasizes.
The Vision Zero Forum offers its members a national and regional member network. Together, the network promotes a positive safety culture and relays the latest information on trends in occupational safety.
The network also shares comparative data and best practices, and produces tools and materials for succeeding at work.
The spring seminar offers a good opportunity to get started in occupational safety networking. A seminar called “Turvallisuus on työn kehittämistä” (Safety is the development of work) will be held at Verkatehdas in Hämeenlinna on 21–22 May.
