NYAB undertakes extensive water work in Södertälje Canal

The project includes dredging of approximately 200,000 cubic meters of soil and rock to widen and deepen the 29 meter wide and eight meter deep fairway through the Södertälje Canal. The fairway, covering a stretch of approximately seven kilometers, starts in Igelstaviken north of Igelsta Bridge and extending to Linasundet. The work is expected to begin in autumn 2024 and completed in 2026. NYAB has previously conducted preparatory pipeline, piling, and dredging work for the Södertälje lock and canal project.

The reconstruction of the Södertälje lock and canal is a large and complex project designed to improve accessibility through the Södertälje lock and canal and further on to the ports in Västerås and Köping. When larger vessels can navigate the fairway, the road network can be relieved, aligning with the goal to shift more goods to rail and maritime transport. The construction works for the lock, canal, and pedestrian and bicycle paths are conducted in stages and are expected to be completed by 2026.
