Heureka’s planetarium to be renovated

Opened in 1989, the Heureka Planetarium was the state of the art in planetarium technology at the time. Heureka wanted to maintain this reputation, and in 2006–2007, the dome theatre was transformed into a digital planetarium. Now the planetarium will see an even bigger change, as the entire presentation technology system and the projection dome will be renewed. The project has received funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2022.

After the renovation, visitors will be able to enjoy an image quality with a significantly increased resolution and projection brightness compared to the current planetarium system. At the same time, the traditional 5.1-channel surround sound system will be replaced with a modern spatial audio system.

The renovation will also improve the planetarium’s accessibility, as special attention will be paid to lighting and the placement of wheelchair spaces. In addition, the planetarium’s stairs and walkways will be made more accessible. After the improvements, the planetarium movies will be available in four different languages through personal induction loops in addition to headphones, and subtitles will be provided with AR glasses.

The Heureka Planetarium will be closed for the renovation from 12 August 2024 until the autumn of 2025.
