Helsinki’s new outdoor advertising equipment will be available from August
The new agreement period for outdoor advertising in public areas will begin on 1 August 2024. Outdoor advertising equipment, such as street billboards and large screens, will also be introduced outside the city centre in the future. The new advertising agreements will significantly increase the advertising revenue received by the city. The introduction of new agreements was delayed due to an appeal to the Market Court. The new agreements will be valid from 1 August 2024 to 31 March 2035.

Based on competitive tendering, two Finnish companies were selected as outdoor advertising operators for the City of Helsinki. Outshine Oy will be responsible for street billboards and advertising columns in the city centre in the future.
In areas outside the city centre, large-screen advertising and street billboards are the responsibility of Keskisuomalainen Oyj. The operators are also responsible for selling advertising space. Moving images can also be used on the new advertising equipment.
The operator for public transport stops and city bike advertising spots will not change in this context.
The agreements also allow for more extensive placement of advertising equipment in suburban areas. The placement of advertising equipment takes into account traffic safety and cityscape values, which are outlined in the city’s principles of outdoor advertising in public areas.
Advertising equipment can be used as an aid to traffic monitoring
The City of Helsinki receives rental income from advertising equipment operators for the location of the advertising equipment and the sale of advertising space. With the new agreements and an increased number of advertising equipment, the city will receive significantly more revenue during the agreement period compared to the previous one.
The city will also receive outdoor advertising time for at least 10 per cent of the total display time for its own needs free of charge. Anonymous traffic monitoring will also be performed with the help of the new advertising equipment, which can be utilised as part of urban planning.
Construction and modification work related to the new advertising equipment will begin in the summer.
