The last of DNA’s copper-based consumer landline services will be terminated by the end of 2024
Copper-based network technology has served telecommunications for over 160 years, but today, its significance is very limited. DNA first announced the replacement of its copper-based networks with more modern cable, fibre optics and mobile solutions in 2021, and work to decommission the old network began the following year. DNA’s remaining copper-based voice communication services will be terminated by the end of 2024 across Finland.

In recent years, the copper-based network has primarily been used for landlines and old xDSL broadband connections with maximum speeds of a few dozen megabits per second. The copper-based network should not be confused with modern cable and fibre optics networks that support connection speeds measured in gigabits per second and in which DNA will continue to invest significantly. Together with mobile solutions, these are the modern technologies replacing the copper-based network. For example, in June 2024, DNA’s 5G network already covered almost 98% of the Finnish population.
The decommissioning of DNA’s copper-based network began in Southwest Finland and Satakunta in 2022. Decommissioning efforts in Eastern Finland were underway by the autumn of 2023. By early 2024, there were only a little over one thousand DNA consumer customers still using copper-based broadband across the entire country. For these customers, the services in question were terminated at the end of March 2024. Service for the small number of remaining landline customers will be shut down by the end of 2024. After this, only services for corporate customers in parts of the country will remain.
DNA will be contacting all copper-based network customers
During the transition, DNA will be notifying all remaining copper-based network customers by mail or telephone before any services are terminated. Affected customers will be offered modern replacement services in place of those terminated. Old equipment and facilities in affected areas will be decommissioned once all customers have been moved to replacement services. The equipment will be recycled as electronic waste and reused.
“The copper-based network is an important part of Finland’s telecommunications history, but now it’s time to move on to a new era. We want to offer our customers the best service possible, which is why we are focusing on modern network solutions that are capable of meeting our present and future needs”, DNA’s VP of Access Networks and Premises Toni Sulosalmi says.

Survey: Many consider their smart devices' security sufficient, even though it does not provide adequate protection2.7.2025 08:30:00 EEST | Press release
Finns view cybersecurity as a topic that is increasingly important and universal. However, more individuals leave their smart devices unprotected against security threats, feeling that security solutions are too expensive, according to DNA’s Digital Life 2025 survey. Approximately one-third (35%) of Finns trust that their devices' built-in security is sufficient. This is concerning, as the security of smart devices alone is not comprehensive enough.
DNA:n kesäkuun 2025 myydyimmät puhelimet, älykellot ja tietokoneet1.7.2025 08:00:00 EEST | Tiedote
Apple vei kärkipaikan sekä DNA:n kuluttaja- että yritysasiakkaiden myydyimpien puhelinten listalla iPhone 16 Pro 5G -mallillaan. Applen iPhone 13 5G säilytti puolestaan ensimmäisen sijan käytettyjen puhelinten listalla. Kesäkuun myydyimpien älykellojen kärkisijat menivät lasten kellopuhelimille. Myydyimpien tuotteiden kärkeen kiilasi Xplora XGO2 -kellopuhelin, ja listan toiselle sijalle nousi ZTE K1 Pro -kellopuhelin. Toisen kvartaalin myydyimmän tietokoneen paikan otti Applen MacBook Air 13" M2.
Puhelimen katoamiseen kannattaa varautua jo ennakolta – tee ainakin nämä toimet uudelle puhelimelle27.6.2025 11:54:39 EEST | Tiedote
Be prepared in case your phone is lost – do at least these steps for your new phone27.6.2025 11:54:39 EEST | Press release
Accidents happen, and your phone is no exception. If a phone is lost or stolen, you can get a new replacement, but information stored in your phone ending up in the wrong hands can cause problems. Fortunately, you can take steps to minimise the damage caused by this in advance.
