A new football stadium to Tapiola Sports Park
27.2.2025 16:48:52 EET | Espoon kaupunki - Esbo stad | Press release
The project plan for the construction of the football stadium in Tapiola Sports Park will soon be discussed by the City Board. The aim is that construction work will begin in 2026, and the stadium will open for football games in season 2029.

The development of Tapiola Sports Park takes a big step forward when the project plan for the construction of the Tapiola Sports Park's football stadium is transferred to the City Board. The reform of the area began by the start of the planning project in December 2019, and the Council approved the plan in April 2021. The decision was appealed to the Helsinki Administrative Court, which rejected the appeal in August 2022. The plan legally entered into force in October 2022.
The new football stadium makes it possible to organise international games and major events. The capacity of the stadium is approximately 6,000 seats. All seats will be under shelter. A parking area for the Sports Park will be located under the stadium, with approximately 670 parking spaces. Approximately 150 parking spaces will be created as a temporary solution on the eastern side of the stadium, where the planned multi-purpose hall would be. Residential blocks will be built on top of the parking area deck on the western edge of the stadium block.
No changes will be made to the existing sports buildings, i.e. ice skating halls, Honkahalli and the old sports hall.
“The Tapiola Sports Park renovation project has been long time coming. With the reform, the area will become an easily approachable and versatile centre for sports and events,” says Olli Isotalo, Urban Environment Director.
Operating of the existing sports halls taken into account in the construction
The companies KOy Tapiolan Stadion and KOy Tapiolan Urheilupuiston Pysäköinti have been established tom carry out the process for the construction of the stadium and the underground parking facility. The companies are 100% owned by the City of Espoo. The companies will organise competitive tendering on the contract for the construction of the stadium block.
The estimated investment cost of the football stadium and the parking facility is EUR 74 million.
The tendering process for the project will take place in the first half of 2025. According to the current estimate, the construction of the stadium could begin in 2026 and be completed in 2029.
The construction work will be carried out in phases, taking into account the operating conditions of the existing sports halls and ice skating halls.
The Public Works Department will design and build other sports facilities in the area, municipal engineering and streets simultaneously with the stadium project.
The City Board will discuss the project plan of the Tapiola Football Stadium on Monday 3 March 2025.
