Largest street renovations in 2025 take place in inner city
The Mäkelänkatu renovation will begin in the autumn. The City’s large ongoing infrastructure projects are proceeding at a good pace. The Mannerheimintie renovation and a large part of the street works for the Crown Bridges Light Rail will be completed this year.

Helsinki will be implementing a wide range of street construction and infrastructure renovation projects in 2025.
“The nation’s capital is growing quickly, and there are also many pipes and other infrastructure under the streets that need to be renovated. This year, the City of Helsinki will start a total of around 200 street work and park projects, the majority of which are small-scale renovations,” says the City of Helsinki’s Unit Manager Liisa Taskila.
Mäkelänkatu the largest new street worksite – Linnanrakentajantie renovation to be postponed
The most notable street construction project to be started in 2025 is the Mäkelänkatu renovation in Vallila, between Hämeentie and Kumpulantie. The work is planned to start in October or November, and the project will last about two years. The project will renew the public utilities and the street’s traffic arrangements.
“Street projects are coordinated to ensure that one area will not have several simultaneous large-scale renovations. When the Mäkelänkatu renovations start, the Mannerheimintie project will be nearly complete or completed,” says the City of Helsinki’s Unit Manager Pihla Kuokkanen.
The Mannerheimintie renovation has proceeded within schedule and will be completed in Taka-Töölö in late 2025. The water pipes in the area from the early 20th century have been replaced with new pipes with an expected service life of at least 100 years.
Due to the coordination of street projects, the City will alter the schedule of the Linnanrakentajantie renovation. The renovation of this street in Herttoniemi will be postponed to 2028–2029. The Kulosaari bridge will also be renovated at the same time.
The original plan was to start the Linnanrakentajantie renovation during this year, but the schedule was changed so that the Junatie metro bridge will be renovated before other projects affecting traffic on Itäväylä.
The renovation of Aleksis Kiven katu will continue and will be completed in late 2026. The work on the Jätkäsaari bridge renovation is progressing, and part of the traffic will be guided to a temporary sea embankment in the autumn. The project will be completed in late 2026.
Progress on Crown Bridges Light Rail
The new Merihaka Bridge will be opened for pedestrians and cyclists in the summer, connecting Merihaka and the southern tip of Kalasatama. The Kruunusillat (Crown Bridges) project on the Laajasalo side is almost complete. The work on Siltasaarenkatu junction in Hakaniemi will continue until November 2025.
Park renovations and new thematic playgrounds
The renovations of Tove Jansson Park will continue in Katajanokka this spring. The objective is to open the renewed park in spring 2026, to honour the 80-year anniversary of Tove Jansson and the Moomins. A new playground will be built in the park, featuring the theme ‘mystical marine world’.
Kaisaniemi Park’s renovation is progressing well. The entrance area to the Botanic Garden will be completed in June. Later in summer, construction projects for e.g. a new play area, a fenced game area and a small outdoor exercise area will start. The goal is to complete all the key areas by the end of 2026. The beach wall at the park’s northern border and the Kaisaniemenrantakatu beach route will be renovated last and will be completed in 2028.
The eastern side of Sibelius Park will be renovated in Taka-Töölö. The basic renovation of the western side was mostly completed last year. The whole park project will be finished in November 2025.
Kimmonpuisto Park in Käpylä will be renovated in stages. The first stage of the park renovation will begin later this year. The second stage will take place in 2028–2029. The park’s play equipment will be based on the Kalevala theme.
Other key projects in 2025
Porkkalankatu between Länsisatamankatu and Länsiväylä and renovations of Selkämerenkatu in Ruoholahti. This project will improve the public amenities of the streets and make the pedestrian and cycling traffic arrangements more efficient and safer.
Hopeasalmentie Bridge in Kulosaari will be repaired.
Street areas around the Kamppi Health and Well-being Centre. The streets around the new centre will be renovated as part of the centre’s construction project.
Makasiini Quay renovation in the South Harbour. The old quay structures will be repaired.
Töölönlahti flood protection (on the Tokoinranta side). Construction of flood protection structures in the Töölönlahti bay area. The old pedestrian and cycling bridge on the Tokoinranta side dating back to the 1960s will be demolished. The flow through the bridge opening cannot be regulated, and a new temporary bridge will be constructed for the duration of the project.
Preconstruction of new districts to continue
The preconstruction of new city districts and residential areas will continue or start in Huopalahdenportti, Hermanninranta, Nihti and Eteläinen Postipuisto in 2025. The preconstruction of city districts – i.e. preparing the street foundations and plots – allows for building new housing for a total of around 13,000 residents.
