St1 expands its biogas network by opening LBG refuelling points for heavy-duty vehicles in Hirvaskangas and Vantaa, in Finland

In May, two new liquefied biogas (LBG) refuelling points were opened in the energy company St1’s station network: one near the company’s Shell station in Hirvaskangas and the other at the St1 Truck station in Voutila, Vantaa. The first LBG refuelling points were opened last year at the Shell Hämeenlinna Iittala, St1 Mäntsälä P and Shell Salo Halikko stations.

The Hirvaskangas station is an important refuelling point for heavy-duty vehicles that run on the long route between Southern and Northern Finland. The station is also located along the TENT-T network, which enables smooth and sustainable mobility from one EU Member State to another. The Voutila station, on the other hand, is centrally located in the hub of the Vantaa logistics area.

In addition, St1’s goal in Finland is to add LBG refuelling points to Iisalmi and Tupos in Liminka during this year, and the aim is to expand the liquefied biogas refuelling network nationwide in the future. The renewable biogas sold at the company’s stations will initially come from various production plants in Northern Europe. Finnish biogas will become available for distribution in 2026 once the new production plants of Suomen Lantakaasu Oy, jointly owned by St1 Biokraft and Valio, are completed.

St1 expands its biogas distribution network in the Nordics

St1 is investing heavily in expanding its liquefied biogas distribution network through the joint venture St1 Biokraft and aims to establish a network of more than 50 stations in the Nordic countries by the end of 2028. In Sweden, St1 Biokraft is already one of the leading biogas distributors, where it has more than 50 compressed biogas (CBG) stations. In addition, the first liquefied biogas station was opened in Torsvik, Jönköping, at the end of last year, and the aim is to open five new LBG stations during 2025. In Norway, St1 Biokraft plans to open its first three LBG distribution points this year.

With an extensive Nordic network, St1’s customers will be able to optimise their transport even better going forward.

“As refuelling opportunities expand and the infrastructure improves, logistics companies are increasingly interested in investing in gas-powered trucks. We see a steep growth in the number of new registrations of gas-powered trucks and by 2030, we expect the total fleet on Finnish roads to be in the thousands”, says Matti Oksanen, Head of Growth at St1 Biokraft.

"Our customers are very pleased that we are expanding our distribution network in the Nordic countries. By transitioning to biogas-powered fleets, companies can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their logistics chain – at best by more than 100 per cent, depending on the origin of the biogas", says Hans von Nandelstadh, Nordic Biogas Manager at St1.

As part of its own energy transition, St1 is also investing in the development of its distribution network in renewable HVO diesel as well as in high-power charging network for electric cars.
