DNA purchases as much as 80 per cent of its electricity from the Ii wind park
21.5.2025 08:30:00 EEST | DNA Oyj | Press release
DNA Plc made a substantial commitment to green energy by concluding a power purchase agreement spanning 10 years for wind power. All of the electricity purchased directly by DNA is renewable. As a result of this new agreement, more than 80 per cent of it will be generated by the new wind park, which is holding its opening ceremony today in Ii, North Ostrobothnia.

DNA’s partner in the agreement is Statkraft, currently the largest producer of renewable energy in Europe. The wind park is located in Ii, Palokangas. This agreement with DNA was one of the reasons the entire wind farm could be built in the first place – an important investment in Finnish green energy.
DNA started purchasing electricity from the Ii wind farm in January 2025, when it started up its operations. The official opening ceremony is being held today, 21 May.
“Our sector provides good services to assist in restraining climate change but electricity will always play a critical role in their production. Technological development has already reduced the relative electricity consumption of data transfer per a transferred kilobyte but as digitalisation advances more electricity will be needed. Because of that, clean energy is a very high priority in our climate work,” says Jaakko Happo, VP Treasury and Administration at DNA.
85 GWh of the plant’s production will be supplied to DNA through the agreement annually. The scope of the electricity production is highlighted by the fact that one GWh is enough for the annual electricity consumption of some 50 detached houses heated by electricity*.
“As data usage continues to grow, it is essential for us as an operator to ensure that we invest in renewable energy sources and continuously seek to optimise the energy efficiency of our network infrastructure. These are also the key factors behind our success in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions from purchased energy by more than 98 per cent over the past five years,” says Jaakko Happo.
The ICT sector uses approximately 4-10 per cent of global electricity and accounts for approximately 3-5 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions. DNA aims to make sure that data in its networks is transferred in the most climate-friendly way possible and is committed to the climate targets set by Science Based Targets (SBTi).
