Construction of new arrangements for the Asema-aukio Square taxi station begins – from June onwards, taxi transport will be provided by two operators

Share

The arrangements of the Asema-aukio Square taxi station will change in June. At the western entrance to the Central Railway Station, taxi transport will be provided by only two operators who won the City’s tendering process: Taksi Helsinki Oy and Mankkaan Taksi Oy (Fixutaxi). Construction work for the new arrangements is set to begin on 26 May. The objective is to complete the work in early June, after which the new arrangements will be put to use. The taxi station will be in use for the most part during the construction work, but the work will cause temporary inconvenience to users of the taxi station.

Last year, the City of Helsinki held a tendering process commissioned by Mayor Juhana Vartiainen due to recurring disturbances on the square caused by an excessive number of taxis and perceived variance in service quality. Two operators were selected in the tendering process, and the tenders submitted were assessed with a wide range of quality criteria. The main focus was on the quality of the operations, such as the training of drivers and the quality of customer service. The tendering process was won by Taksi Helsinki Oy and Mankkaan Taksi Oy (Fixutaxi), who will be the only operators at the taxi station delimited with booms and barriers from June onwards. Other operators will be primarily using other areas near the railway station.

Construction work for the new arrangements is set to begin on 26 May. The work will be carried out by Taxi Point Oy, which was selected as the control operator in the same tendering process and will build a boom on the square with its subcontractors. The work will not cause any major changes to the traffic arrangements of the area. The taxi station will be in use for the most part during the construction work, and taxis will also be available in the surroundings of the railway station, e.g. at Elielinaukio and on the Railway Square side.

The boom installed by the control operator will recognise the vehicles of the operators that won the tendering process.  The control operator will also be responsible for keeping the City updated on the situation. The City will monitor how the change affects the surroundings of the station and take measures where needed.
