Readers of the international Travel and Leisure magazine voted Helsinki Airport among the top ten airports in the world in July 2025. Helsinki Airport is the only European airport to reach a top spot on the popular tourism industry magazine’s list.

“We are proud of the fact that Finland and Helsinki Airport are gaining international recognition. Helsinki Airport has maintained its strong position among the best airports in the world, which increases Finland’s attractiveness as a destination,” says Ulla Serlenius, Helsinki Airport’s Airport Director at the Finnish airport company Finavia.

This is the first time that Helsinki Airport has been placed on the annual Best Awards list of the Travel and Leisure magazine.

“Airports are evaluated on the basis of factors such as accessibility, smooth passenger processes, restaurants, shops and design. The final placement is determined by an average of these evaluations,” says Serlenius.

The top three airports were Istanbul Airport in Turkey, Chang Airport in Singapore and Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar. Helsinki Airport was seventh on the list.

Nearly 180,000 readers voted in the 2025 survey. The most successful airports were described as destinations that one must experience.

Helsinki Airport has also invested in experiences by listening to the trends in air travel. In recent years, restaurants and cafés have opened at the airport, with shared seating areas that invite you to spend time together. Passengers are also served by the world’s first second-hand café and shop, an outdoor terrace and renovated lounge facilities.

Helsinki Airport’s services are well-recognised: the airport was recently selected as the commercial space of the year 2025 and the food court at the gate area was awarded the food court of the year 2024.

Finavia’s website, on the other hand, shows the estimated queueing time at security control for passengers. The estimate, which makes it easier to plan one's trip, collected 100,000 views in just a few months and received positive feedback from passengers.

“Helsinki Airport has received several awards for its customer experience. For many international passengers, the airport is their first contact with Finland and the Finnish character, and we are so happy that we have managed to stay in people's minds. I would like to thank the entire airport community for this recognition – the success belongs to all of us,” says Airport Director Ulla Serlenius.

Airports are accredited at seven different levels, with net zero being the highest. Currently, over 640 airports worldwide are part of the program.
