St1 opens its first EV-only charging station in Finland

Share

Shell Ylöjärvi will become St1’s first energy station in Finland dedicated primarily serving electric vehicle (EV) drivers. The sale of liquid fossil fuels at the site will end on August 15. Despite the end of fuel distribution, the HelmiSimpukka restaurant and Car Wash services will continue to operate as usual.

The Shell station in Ylöjärvi will fully discontinue fossil fuel sales when the heavy-duty diesel dispenser is also taken out of service on August 15, 2025. Sales of petrol and diesel for passenger cars have already ended earlier in the spring. Fuel sales are being discontinued because the station was not granted an environmental permit, which prevents the continued distribution of fossil fuels on the station.

“We’ve been expanding our St1 Charge high-power charging network across the Nordics at a rapid pace this year. However, this marks the first time in Finland that we’re continuing operations at the station without any liquid fuels”, says St1’s Juha Vanninen, Head of Retail in Finland.

St1 currently offers fast charging services at 41 stations in Finland, with nine of those opened this year. In addition, the network includes 37 stations in Sweden and 30 in Norway. The company opened its first EV-only charging station in Oslo, Norway, in spring 2025.

Fast high-power charging

Road transport in Finland is undergoing a major transformation as the number of fully electric vehicles continues to grow. St1 is responding to this change by investing in its high-power charging network, providing EV drivers with convenient, fast and reliable charging options.

“Charging at a high-power station that utilizes cutting-edge technology is significantly faster than at traditional AC or standard DC charging points. Each charging point offers a maximum power output of 400 kW, enabling ultra-fast charging for vehicles equipped with CCS2 connectors. In Ylöjärvi, the charging points are located under the former fuel canopy and are designed as drive-through stations”,  Vanninen explains.

St1 is transitioning to a One Brand strategy

Familiar service stations are getting a new look, as Shell-branded stations are being converted into St1 stations. The Shell Ylöjärvi station will also be rebranded as St1 in September–October 2025.

St1 has used the Shell brand under a licensing agreement in its retail operations since 2010, and the current licensing period is now coming to an end. The rebranding is part of St1’s Nordic strategy to unify all retail operations under the St1 brand across Finland, Sweden and Norway. In total, approximately 630 Shell-branded stations will be converted to St1. Following the rebranding, St1’s Nordic network will consist of around 1,250 energy stations.

In addition to expanding its EV charging network, St1 is also continuously developing its station network for the distribution of renewable fuels and biogas for heavy transport.

St1 has received financial support for investments in its EV charging network from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, which has co-funded infrastructure in both Finland and Sweden. In addition, the Finnish Energy Authority has supported the construction of charging points in Finland.
