Renovation of Playground Viiri begins – forest atmosphere to be preserved
Almost all the play equipment in Playground Viiri and surfaces in the yard area will be replaced in the renovation project starting in August. The project also involves work on Tilkkaniitty park’s park corridors and lighting. The renovation will be completed in August 2026.

The sand pitch next to the skate park of the playground located in Pikku Huopalahti will be converted into an artificial grass pitch. In addition to this, some outdoor fitness equipment will be set up at the southern tip of the playground to replace the existing fitness area. The project will also add several tables with benches and bike racks to the park, as well as planting boxes based on a proposal submitted in the City’s participatory budgeting process, OmaStadi. A new water play area will also be built in the park.
Forest atmosphere to be preserved
The forest atmosphere and identity of Playground Viiri will be reinforced by preserving most of the trees and vegetation in the area and by choosing surface materials and play equipment that fit the theme.
A new climbing frame will be added to the park, depicting a reclining troll. The existing troll statues will be preserved and moved to new locations.
Part of the yard area to remain open for almost the entire project
The work will start on the south side of the playground building in August 2025, at which time the construction site will be fenced off. There will be free access to the playground building from the pedestrian and bicycle paths on the north side, and the skate park will also remain freely accessible from the west side. The popular seating and recreation areas on the south side will remain open to the public.
A part of the park will remain open during the playground's opening hours. In summer 2026, the yard area will be closed during the summer break of the playground.
Construction traffic will run alongside the Haaganpuro stream. During the works, pedestrian and cycling traffic will be diverted to temporary routes. The renovation will not involve pile driving, excavation or any other particularly noisy work.
