InCollection | Antti Laitinen: Chiming Forest | 24 September 2025 – 23 August 2026

Antti Laitinen (b. 1975) invites the audience to step into a Chiming Forest. Sculptural trees rise from the museum’s concrete floor, assembled from twigs, branches, and roots gathered in forests and clear-cut areas of southern Finland. Together they create a human-made woodland inside the exhibition space – a landscape set in motion, given sound, and brought to new life through mechanical systems. The work reflects on humankind’s capacity and means to shape nature.

Chiming Forest is the eighth exhibition in the InCollection series by EMMA and the Saastamoinen Foundation. Each year, a visionary contemporary artist is invited to create a new work for the Foundation’s collection and to build an immersive exhibition around it at EMMA.

Dialogues | On permanent display

The Dialogues exhibition, built around the idea of an open dialogue between artworks, showcases Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection through regularly renewed displays. The new installation completes the transition that has gradually replaced the earlier Touch exhibition. The display introduces over 40 works, including international names never before seen in Finland as well as emerging Finnish artists.

New artists featured: Pamela Brandt, Océane Bruel, Curtis Cuffie, Rineke Dijkstra, Elmgreen & Dragset, VALIE EXPORT, Sami Havia, Hannaleena Heiska, Markku Keränen, Lebohang Kganye, Markus Konttinen, Paul McCarthy, Thao Nguyen Phan, Howardena Pindell, Pol Taburet, Emilia Tanner, Toni Vallasjoki and Xiao Zhiyu. In addition, one of the galleries is dedicated to works depicting the human figure in different ways, including pieces by Mirja Airas, Milla Aska, Gösta Diehl, Marlene Dumas, Marjatta Hanhijoki, Chantal Joffe, Sanya Kantarovsky, Markus Lüpertz, Olavi Martikainen, Åke Mattas, Elina Merenmies, Elizabeth Peyton, Janne Räisänen, Dana Schutz, Mari Sunna, Antti Tanttu, Rosemarie Trockel and Rafael Wardi.

Mohamed Bourouissa: The Genealogy of Violence | 24 September 2025–15 February 2026

Mohamed Bourouissa (b. 1978) often addresses social issues and the experiences of immigrants in his video and photographic works. The Genealogy of Violence presented in the media space of the Dialogues exhibition follows a couple conversing in a car in a typical French suburb. Their exchange is abruptly interrupted when two police officers approach and arrest one of them to carry out a body search. Special effects transport the viewer inside the protagonist’s mind to experience what it feels like when when one is stripped of control over their own body.
