The winner of Espoo Roadwork Site of the Year 2025 competition is Area Contract 1 for Espoo Rail Line, Kilo Station site. According to the jury, special attention was paid to both pedestrian conditions and guidance at the site and cycling signs and detours. The worksite has also demonstrated creative problem-solving skills, such as a light barrier placed in front of a low underpass. The worksite is the responsibility of GRK Finland Ltd. The purchaser of the project is the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

Honourable mention for excellent carpentry

The competition also involved an honourable mention for skilled carpentry. It was granted to the temporary transport stops realised in an exemplary manner. The honourable mention went to Matti Sallinen, the builder of the temporary stops on Itsehallintotie street. The stops ensured that the conditions for public transport users remained excellent despite temporary arrangements at the worksite.

The Roadwork Site of the Year award aims to promote best practices

The competition that has taken place in Helsinki for five summers was now held in Espoo for the first time. The aim of the competition is to promote good worksite practices and to share them between various operators in the field. During its visits, the multiprofessional jury assessed how the site has managed to ensure that site arrangements, guidance and temporary routes are functional for different users of the street. The attitude of the site operators plays an important role in finding the winner.

  • "With the help of the competition, we want to inspire worksite operators to improve their level of minimising the negative impact on residents. Improving the conditions for street-goers also facilitates a smooth progress at the worksite,” states Vesa Ahonen, project engineer at the City of Espoo.

The jury of the Roadwork Site of the Year competition consists of both construction professionals (Infra Association) and purchasers (Finnish Property Owners Rakli, City of Espoo, Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY), in addition to city operators (Helsinki Region Transport HSL and Helsinki Region Chamber of Commerce) and accessibility experts (Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired and Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities). The jury activities were coordinated by Ramboll.

The winner of the competition was announced at the award ceremony at the Maanrakennuspäivät excavation trade fair held at Finlandia Hall on 2 October 2025.
