Autumn holiday trip coming up? Remember these tips for using mobile data abroad

Share

Many Finns head abroad during the autumn break, and a smartphone is usually part of the travel gear. Finnish mobile subscriptions work abroad via local operators’ networks through roaming. Mikko Valtonen, Vice President of Mobile Business at DNA, listed a few tips to help travelers use mobile data worry-free.

Within the EU, mobile data can nowadays be used relatively freely thanks to operator- and subscription-specific EU data packages. However, when traveling further or near border areas, it’s wise to be more cautious.

“When traveling to EU or EEA countries, you can be fairly relaxed, as calls and text messages are charged at domestic rates without additional roaming fees. Data usage is also free of extra charges within the limits of the EU data package included in your subscription. Outside the EU, however, the prices for calls, messages, and data are not regulated, so it’s important to check them in advance. In distant destinations, the easiest way to keep data costs under control is by using services designed for that purpose, such as DNA Reissudata,” Valtonen explains.

In EU border areas, users must also ensure that their phone stays connected to an EU network. This can be done by changing the network/operator selection in the device settings from automatic to manual.

In addition to roaming, travelers can also take advantage of free wireless WiFi networks and WiFi calling, as long as they take care of cybersecurity.

“Public wireless networks are a good free option, but they should be used with caution due to their increased vulnerability. It’s advisable to protect the connection with a VPN. We offer consumers a separate security service that includes this feature,” Valtonen continues.

You can also save data usage during the trip by downloading large content to your device in advance. This is especially important when watching videos online, as streaming HD-quality video can consume up to 2.5 gigabytes of data per hour.

“EU data packages included in subscriptions are nowadays quite large and cover normal data usage needs well. However, watching videos can quickly use up the entire package, so it’s best to download movies to your phone or tablet before leaving Finland,” Valtonen advises.

Before the trip, it’s also wise to familiarize yourself with your phone’s remote management features in case of loss or theft. Apple devices use the Find My iPhone app via iCloud, while Android devices can be remotely managed using Google’s Find My Device service.

“In case of theft or loss, many smartphones can be located and locked via the internet using the manufacturer’s service. That’s why it’s important to get to know these features in advance so you can act quickly if needed. At the very least, you should change the default PIN code of your SIM card to one you’ve created yourself. Otherwise, it’s too easy for a thief to take control of your subscription and rack up a large bill,” Valtonen reminds.

Tutkimus: Valtiolliset toimijat vasta toiseksi suurin kyberturvallisuuden huolenaihe suomalaisyrityksille8.10.2025 10:00:00 EEST | Tiedote

DNA:n teettämän tuoreen tietoturvatutkimuksen* mukaan 70 prosenttia Suomessa toimivien yritysten ICT-päättäjistä on huolissaan kyberturvallisuudesta. Konkreettisessa varautumisessa on yrityksillä kuitenkin petrattavaa, sillä vain reilu neljännes harjoittelee kyberkriisitilanteita ja toiminnan palauttamista. Merkittävimpänä huolenaiheena pidetään yhä tietojen joutumista vääriin käsiin. Valtiollisiin toimijoihin kohdistuvan huolen osuus on laskenut hieman edellisvuodesta, mutta niihin liittyvä uhkakuva nähdään edelleen vasta toiseksi suurimpana. Tietoturvaan tehtävät investoinnit ovat puolestaan edelleen kasvussa.

Survey: State actors rank as the second most significant cybersecurity concern among Finnish companies8.10.2025 10:00:00 EEST | Press release

According to a recent cybersecurity survey* commissioned by DNA, 70 percent of ICT decision-makers in companies operating in Finland are concerned about cybersecurity. However, when it comes to concrete preparedness, companies still have room for improvement: only just over a quarter practice cyber crisis scenarios and business recovery. The greatest concern remains the risk of data falling into the wrong hands. Although concern about state actors has slightly decreased compared to last year, they are still seen as the second most significant threat. Investments in cybersecurity continue to grow.

DNA:n syyskuun 2025 myydyimmät puhelimet, älykellot ja tietokoneet1.10.2025 08:00:00 EEST | Tiedote

Applen uutuussarjan iPhone 17 Pro Max 5G otti heti kärkipaikan DNA:n kuluttaja-asiakkaiden myydyimpien puhelinten listalla. Kolmannen kvartaalin myydyimmän tietokoneen paikan nappasi Applen MacBook Air 13" M4.
