Important launch from Merus Power – New energy storage technology in the Nordics

Merus Power has implemented the first grid-forming energy storage system in the Nordics for its Swiss customer, Alpiq. The 30 MW / 36 MWh energy storage facility commissioned in Valkeakoski meets Fingrid’s requirements for large grid-forming energy storage systems. The technology’s functionality has been verified and approved by Fingrid through simulations and rigorous field testing. Grid-forming energy storages can independently support the grid in case of faults and disturbances. The system strengthens grid stability and enables a higher share of renewable energy in the power system.
“We are proud that Merus Power has implemented the first grid-forming energy storage system in the Nordics. This achievement demonstrates the high level of Finnish product development and expertise, and our ability to respond to the new demands of the energy transition swiftly and reliably. Security of supply and cybersecurity are also key values for us, as energy storages are part of critical infrastructure. This project strengthens our position as a significant European energy storage player and advances our strategy towards a more sustainable and secure energy system,”
says Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power.
“This first grid-forming energy storage system developed in the Nordics is an important step towards an even cleaner and more flexible electricity system. It is great to see new technological solutions like this being introduced to the power system to ensure its reliable operation and enable the growth of renewable energy in the grid. Fingrid works closely with technology developers and looks openly towards the future,” comments Asta Sihvonen-Punkka, CEO of Fingrid Oy.
Merus Power acted as the developer, supplier, and EPC contractor for the project, responsible for the entire process from permitting and design to manufacturing, delivery, and commissioning. The company’s energy storage systems are based on its own technology developed in Finland. The investment in grid-forming development complements Merus Power’s equipment portfolio and strengthens its technology leadership. The customer for the project is a Swiss energy company Alpiq, for which this is also the first grid-forming energy storage project. The project reinforces Alpiq’s position as a provider of flexibility solutions in the European electricity market and supports the growth of renewable energy.
“This first grid-forming energy storage system is a major milestone for us, and an excellent example of how collaboration and innovation can accelerate the green transition. At Alpiq, we proudly bring our expertise to flexible solutions that support a cleaner energy future. Despite the demanding product development process, the system was delivered ahead of schedule, which is a remarkable achievement from Merus Power. It also reflects the strong commitment of everyone involved,” says Lukas Gresnigt, Head of International and member of the Alpiq Executive Board.
Merus Power’s energy storage systems maintain a high level of security of supply even during global crises, as the company is a European operator with manufacturing based in Finland. In addition, cybersecurity is a key element of the equipment solutions, as energy storages are part of critical infrastructure. The company has established its position as one of the leading energy storage providers in the Nordics. This project demonstrates how energy storages can enhance grid stability and security of supply, while enabling the broader integration of renewable energy.
