As the results of the matriculation examination and the autumn's joint application process are published each year, they evoke a wide range of emotions. Many young people are now asking themselves what they should do next if they did not get a study place or they are still looking for the right direction. This year, a new and comprehensive solution is available for their situation: the joint Opin.fi service launched in spring 2025, which brings together the open studies offered by Finnish higher education institutions in a single location for the first time.

What is Opin.fi? Opin.fi is a digital service of a completely new type that for the first time displays the open studies offered by the Finnish universities and universities of applied sciences in a single location. The service is intended for everyone who wants to develop their competence – seek new skills, complement their education or familiarise themselves with higher education studies.
Opin.fi offers versatile opportunities:
* Competence updates and complementary education: Flexible options for anyone who wants to deepen or expand their competence.
* Opportunities for open studies for secondary level students: Lowers the threshold for familiarisation with higher education studies even before a student applies for a place in a degree programme.
* New career paths and career change opportunities: Support for those who are considering a change of careers or who need new skills in the workplace.
* Flexible forms of study: Studies are available in Finnish, Swedish and English and as contact teaching or distance learning, ranging from webinars to larger modules. Students can earn credits or complete studies without them.
How does Opin.fi work?
The service allows you to browse a wide range of open studies and filter searches based on your needs (such as form of study, schedule, credits, topic area). Current study modules that open up new perspectives are provided under the umbrella of inspiring themes. When you find suitable studies, you can register for them directly in the relevant higher education institution's service.
“Continuous learning is essential in today’s world of work, and Opin.fi makes it more accessible than ever for everyone. Through Opin.fi we can offer flexible study opportunities for both young and more experienced experts who wish to update their skills or find a new direction. This is a significant step towards more open and flexible higher education in Finland”, Hanna Nordlund, the project manager of the Digivisio 2030 project, says.
The offer of studies in Opin.fi will expand continuously as it is joined in 2025 by all 37 Finnish higher education institutions involved in its development. The higher education institutions' joint Digivisio 2030 project is responsible for building and developing the service, while it is operated by HigherEd Hub Finland Oy.
