Construction of the Lentoasemankorttelit area in Malminkenttä to start with street construction

The project includes the construction of Vanhan Viipurin maantie between Ilmasillantie and Kastrupinkatu and the construction of Malmin lentoaseman katu. At the same time, the water supply line will be relocated. The contract also includes the construction of Malmin lentoaseman aukio square, the terminal courtyards and the water supply and electricity supply for the Malminkenttä event area.

New streets to improve local pedestrian and cycling connections

Vanha Viipurin maantie will replace the current rock dust path in the area. When completed, the street will provide a pedestrian and cycling link to the Nallenrinne residential area from Tattariharjuntie and the Lentoasemankorttelit area across Ilmasillantie.

Malmin lentoaseman katu will provide better access routes to Malmin lentoaseman aukio square and Malminkenttä. Improving the services at Malminkenttä will provide modern infrastructure for organising events, for example.

The work will start in December 2025 with the felling of trees in the street areas. The actual street construction work will start in January 2026 and last until the end of the year.

When Vanha Viipurin maantie is completed, planting areas with deciduous trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses will be placed along it. Benches, litter bins and bike racks will be placed near the planting areas. After the street construction phase, the streets will remain on base asphalt, and the actual surface asphalt and landscaping work will be completed once the buildings have been completed.

Malminkenttä to be home to 5,000 residents

Housing development in Malminkenttä will be concentrated in the Nallenrinne and Lentoasemankorttelit areas until the 2030s with housing construction for a total of around 5,000 people.

Housing construction has already started in the Nallenrinne area, which will see the construction of homes for around 2,800 people. To accommodate the new residents, the City is building services and improving transport links in the area. The Nallenrinteenpuisto park built to the north will form part of the network of parks connecting the Malminkenttä area.

The Lentoasemankorttelit area will provide new homes, services and recreational areas for 2,200 residents. The old airport buildings of cultural and historical significance will create a unique atmosphere in the new residential area. Residential construction in the Lentoasemankorttelit area will start in 2027.
