St1 opened new biogas refueling points for heavy transport in Iisalmi and Liminka, Finland
20.1.2026 10:00:02 EET | St1 | Press release
Energy company St1 has strengthened its commitment to sustainable transport by opening two new liquefied biogas (LBG) refueling points within its station network for heavy-duty transport. The stations, located in Iisalmi and Liminka, bring St1’s network in Finland to a total of seven dedicated LBG stations serving heavy transport.

The new biogas stations support St1’s objective of expanding its LBG network nationwide. The location of the Iisalmi station is strategically significant for Eastern Finland’s transport, serving both north–south transport and regional logistics.
The Liminka station is located in Tupos, a strong logistics hub along Highway 4. Its location enables smooth refueling opportunities particularly for heavy traffic serving Northern Finland and the Oulu economic region.
“Biogas is a key part of St1’s energy transition toward low-emission transport. We are committed to expanding the LBG network because we want to offer our customers a cost-effective and practical solution for reducing emissions. As the network grows, it becomes easier for logistics companies to plan routes and switch to biogas – supporting their competitiveness and meeting their customers’ increasing targets to lower carbon footprints”, says Hans von Nandelstadh, Nordic Biogas Manager, St1.
Previously, LBG refueling points have been opened in St1’s Finnish station network in Iittala (Hämeenlinna), Mäntsälä, Halikko (Salo), Hirvaskangas and Voutila (Vantaa). In spring 2026, new LBG stations will be opened in Liperi and Imatra. The goal is to have a total of 14 LBG points in the Finnish network by the end of 2026 and approximately 20 points by the end of 2028.
Nordic biogas distribution network continues to expand
St1 is making strong investments in the development of a liquefied biogas distribution network in the Nordics in cooperation with its joint venture St1 Biokraft. The goal is to establish a network of more than 50 LBG stations by the end of 2028. To date, 13 LBG stations have already been opened across Finland, Sweden and Norway, and a further 14 stations are planned to open during the current year. In addition, St1 Biokraft operates more than 50 compressed biogas (CBG) stations in Sweden.
“The expansion of the LBG network is not only an infrastructure investment – it’s a critical step in scaling a Nordic biogas market that can support heavy transport for decades to come. This is a long-term commitment to provide a predictable supply along the routes where heavy transport moves and with cross-border compatibility. We are developing a network that gives hauliers the confidence to transition, knowing that the fuel they choose today will remain reliable, available, and future‑proof across the Nordics”, says Matti Oksanen, Head of Downstream and Central Europe, St1 Biokraft.
As part of its own energy transition, St1 is also investing in the development of its distribution network in renewable HVO diesel as well as in high-power charging network for electric cars.
