The office reveals the tensions of hybrid work – experts highlight the role of space in the transformation of working life

With hybrid work now firmly established, one crucial perspective still receives too little attention: the office itself. The latest article in the State Treasury’s 150th anniversary series highlights how workspaces reveal organisations’ understanding of trust, human interaction, and the rhythm of work. According to Elsi Vuohelainen, Head of Personnel Development at the State Treasury, and Architect Anis Souissi from US Architects Ltd, offices do not merely respond to change – they reveal it. Renewing office spaces is therefore part of a deeper structural transformation of working life, not just a matter of facilities.

Working life is evolving faster than ever, and the environments in which work takes place are changing with it. The new article, The spaces we work in reveal who we want to become, examines how workspaces act both as mirrors and drivers of societal development.
“We need a culture that dares to slow down, listen and truly meet one another. Most workspaces are built for performance, not for human interaction,” Vuohelainen says.
The article explores how both physical and digital environments shape work practices, community, and even the way we think. Workspaces are not merely a backdrop – they guide behaviour, build culture, and reveal what organisations value.
Souissi emphasises that architecture can respond to societal tensions and support meaningful encounters. Vuohelainen notes that hybrid work brings both challenges and opportunities: when work is divided between remote and office-based settings, spaces must support both focused work and spontaneous interaction.
“Architecture loses its meaning when people’s needs are overshadowed. Design becomes driven by the illusion of egoless freedom or by the repetition of familiar solutions without genuinely analysing new trends or critical insights,” Souissi says.
Balancing these pressures is a societal challenge, as cultures and communities continuously adapt to emerging phenomena. The article raises a broader question: what kinds of workspaces does the future require, and how can we build environments that endure change, foster trust, and enable new forms of community?
Perspectives at a historical turning point
The article is part of the State Treasury’s 150th anniversary series, which brings together history, the present, and the future. The series examines societal change from multiple angles and highlights the phenomena shaping our time. Rather than offering ready-made answers, it invites discussion and new interpretations.

Toimisto paljastaa hybridityön jännitteet – asiantuntijat korostavat tilojen roolia työelämän muutoksessa30.1.2026 07:53:00 EET | Tiedote
Hybridityön murroksessa yksi näkökulma on jäänyt vähemmälle huomiolle.
