Teosto in 2025: The copyright revenue for music represented by Teosto exceeded EUR 90 million for the first time

In 2025, the royalties collected directly by Teosto amounted to EUR 84.8 million (2024: €79.2m). When other kinds of copyright revenue are included, such as performing right royalties from abroad and the private copying levy, Teosto’s total revenue increases to EUR 92.3 million (2024: €88.1m). Due to the real increase in the use of online music, the growth is also a result of Teosto’s transition to a usage-based recording practice for international online services, which had an impact of approximately EUR 4 million in 2025.

The total distribution of music royalties, i.e. the distribution to Teosto’s rightholder members, reached a new record high of EUR 79.6 million (2024: €75.4m). The total distribution refers to the net amount that Teosto distributes to its rightholder members. Teosto’s operating costs and cultural contributions have been deducted from the amount, and Teosto’s investment income and reversed provisions for previous years have been added.

In 2025, Teosto’s operating costs amounted to EUR 12.6 million. As revenue increased more than the costs, Teosto’s expense percentage decreased to 13.2% (2024: 13.4%). This means that an even greater proportion of the funds collected could be distributed to music creators and publishers.

In 2025, Teosto spent a total of EUR 2.5 million on the promotion of Finnish music (2024: €3.1m). The largest individual target was the support activities of the Teosto Cultural Foundation, which accounted for EUR 0.5 million. In addition, the money was used to fund other music industry projects, organisations and industry advocacy aimed at ensuring the continued success and diversity of Finnish music.

“Last year, we once again managed to increase the total amount of royalties, although most of the growth can be explained by non-recurring factors.  We organised our international partnerships and continued to invest in new technologies that enable us to serve our rightholder members and music user customers even better in an ever-changing operating environment,” says Risto Salminen, CEO of Teosto.

The importance of online music as a resource for the music business continued to grow – revenue from abroad also increased

In 2025, the music royalties collected by Teosto from online services increased to EUR 25.3 million (2024: EUR 19.6 million). The royalties from online audio services (music streaming services) increased to EUR 16.4 million (2024: €11.2m). The royalties collected from online AV services also increased, reaching EUR 8.9 million (2024: €8.5m).  

In addition to the increased use of music, the result was also affected by Teosto’s transition to a usage-based recording practice for international online services. The change in the recording practice increased the category’s result by approximately EUR 4 million.

In 2025, Teosto invested in strengthening its international operations, and distributions from abroad to Teosto’s members increased nearly 14% to EUR 6.3 million (2024: €5.6m).

The royalties collected by Teosto for concerts, gigs and festivals remained approximately at the same level as in 2024.  In 2025, the royalties collected for the category amounted to EUR 7.2 million (2024: €7.3m).

Teosto represents more than 44,000 rightholders

At the end of 2025, Teosto had 44,076 rightholder members, of which 1,680 were new members. The average age of Teosto’s music creator members was 47 years, and the average age of members who joined in 2025 was 37 years. The number of Teosto’s voting members increased by 238 to 1,425 members.

In 2025, women still accounted for only 21% of Teosto’s members, which is at the same level as in previous years. The proportion of women has increased slowly, although the proportion of women is significantly higher among new members, amounting to 25.5%.

In 2025, Teosto continued to monitor and promote equality and non-discrimination in the music industry together with other music industry players as part of its broader sustainability and advocacy work.

Key figures at a glance

• The most music royalties were collected for TV (EUR 22.3 million), events (EUR 14.7 million) and background music (EUR 11.6 million). The TV category includes both linear TV channels and their free streaming services. In addition to concerts, gigs and festivals, the event category also includes royalties collected for the use of music by municipalities, parishes, cinemas and stages.
• The performing right royalties collected for concerts, gigs and festivals amounted to EUR 7.2 million (2024: €7.3m).
• The royalties from abroad distributed to Teosto’s music creator and publisher members amounted to EUR 6.3 million (2024: €5.6m).
• The royalties collected from online platforms (e.g. music and AV content streaming services, social media) increased to a total of EUR 25.3 million (2024: €19.6m).
• Teosto spent EUR 2.5 million on promoting Finnish music. The amount was used to provide funding for the activities of music industry foundations and organisations as well as projects that increase the vitality of the music industry and strengthen advocacy. The largest single item was the support activities of the Teosto Cultural Foundation (EUR 0.5 million). In addition, Teosto donated approximately EUR 20 million in shares in funds to the Foundation in 2025.
• At the end of 2025, Teosto had a total of 44,076 rightholder members, of which 1,680 were new members. 18 members left Teosto. At the end of the year, Teosto had 1,425 voting members.
