Axel Straschnoy: We believe and accept that these beings exist | 15 April – 9 August 2026

The solo exhibition of Axel Straschnoy (b. 1978, Buenos Aires) at EMMA is part of the Fine Arts Academy of Finland Prize awarded to the artist in 2025. The exhibition invites reflection on the societal significance of utopian thinking and tests the boundaries of political imagination.

We believe and accept that these beings exist is a multi-part installation spanning the entire exhibition. It examines Posadism, a marginal political movement that emerged in Argentina in the late 1950s. Its founder, the Trotskyist leader J. Posadas, posited that contact with advanced communist civilisations in outer space could enable the creation of a new kind of society on Earth – one without poverty, hunger or war. Straschnoy revisits the Posadist vision in a time marked by deepening political and ecological crises.

The exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Fine Arts Academy of Finland Foundation and the City of Espoo. The prize also includes a publication produced by EMMA, to be released in spring. Previous award exhibitions at EMMA have featured artists Tuomas A. Laitinen, Camilla Vuorenmaa, Outi Pieski, Aaron Heino and Katarina Reuter.
