Leading DC fast charging manufacturer Kempower has supplied infrastructure for the Netherlands’ second largest public heavy-duty fast charging station in Rotterdam, operated by truck charging specialist WattHub. Kempower worked in collaboration with its sales and service partner, Virta, which delivered the site’s charging management and payment software, and TSG, which delivered the installation.
The 5,000 m² charging plaza, located at the Rotterdam World Gateway terminal at the Port of Rotterdam, is officially open and the first phase of development saw 3.5 MW of total available power installed. 30 Kempower Satellites are currently live, each delivering up to 400 kW per plug to the connected vehicles.
A second phase of installations will begin before the second half of this year, when a further 1,500 m² of plaza and 2,100 kW of additional charging power will be added – enough for around another 10 vehicles. The site serves both trucks travelling to and from the port and off-highway vehicles working around the terminal.
The site has also been built to be Kempower Megawatt Charging System (MCS) ready, with the necessary cables and software already installed. This means that WattHub can easily add Kempower Mega Satellites, capable of delivering up to 1.2 MW of power per plug, to the site at a later date with no further installation work required. Such an upgrade could become important for the site as commercial MCS-enabled trucks are becoming more common.
MCS technology facilitates the full charging of a standard e-truck in as little as 45 minutes – equivalent to the minimum required legal rest stop for EU truck drivers – meaning that long-haul logistics journeys can be feasibly electrified.
Han Dix, Country Manager for the Benelux region, said: “Having powered the Netherlands’ largest truck charging plaza in Geldermalsen with WattHub just two years ago, we’re excited to strengthen our partnership with this milestone project at the Port of Rotterdam. There is real momentum around the electrification of trucking at the moment and it’s fantastic to see industrial sites like the Rotterdam World Gateway enabling emissions-free logistics and construction in this way. We’re proud to support this.”
Gerben van den Berg, CEO of WattHub, said: “A heavily industrial charging location like the Port of Rotterdam requires chargers that are robust, reliable and powerful enough to charge large vehicles in a short time. Our previous collaborations with Kempower have consistently proven that they can deliver this, so we have been delighted to partner once again.”
