St1, together with biomethane company St1 Biokraft, continues the expansion of its heavy-duty biogas network in Finland. The new liquefied biogas (LBG) refuelling points opened in Liperi and Imatra this spring increase the network to nine LBG stations.

The new stations strengthen the availability of biogas particularly along key transport routes in Eastern Finland and support the transition towards lower‑emission heavy‑duty transport. The LBG stations in Liperi and Imatra complement the nationwide network and improve the ability of biogas‑powered vehicles to operate smoothly on long‑distance routes.

“For heavy‑duty transport to genuinely reduce emissions, the fuel must be available where transport flows are. The new LBG stations in Liperi and Imatra are a concrete step towards a more comprehensive network and make the everyday use of biogas easier for transport operators”, says Mikko Reinekari, Head of Sales Finland, St1.

The aim is to further expand Finland’s biogas network. Previously, LBG refuelling points have been opened in Iittala (Hämeenlinna), Mäntsälä, Halikko (Salo), Hirvaskangas, Voutila (Vantaa), Iisalmi and Liminka. By the end of 2026, additional LBG refuelling points are planned to open in Riihimäki, Pori, Nurmo (Seinäjoki) and Ojanko (Vantaa). In addition, compressed biogas (CBG) refuelling points will be opened in Kiuruvesi, Riihimäki and Ojanko (Vantaa).

The target is that by the end of 2028, Finland’s network will comprise a total of approximately 20 LBG points.

“This year marks a clear turning point for gas-powered heavy-duty transport. The number of gas trucks on the road is growing at a record pace, and our monthly registration data shows a momentum we haven’t seen before. Transport companies are no longer just planning the transition – they are actively making the investments”, says Matti Oksanen, Head of Downstream and Central Europe, St1 Biokraft.

Nordic biogas distribution network continues to expand

St1’s biogas distribution network in Finland is being developed as part of a broader Nordic framework. A total of 15 LBG refuelling points have already been opened across Finland, Sweden and Norway, with the opening pace averaging around one new station a month.

The objective is to have more than 50 LBG stations in operation across the Nordic countries by the end of 2028, enabling heavy‑duty transport to operate seamlessly across national borders. In addition, St1 Biokraft already operates more than 50 compressed biogas (CBG) stations in Sweden.
