The Research Council of Finland (RCF) has decided on the research projects to be funded in its main funding call. In the 2026 winter call, the RCF granted funding to research across a wide variety of research fields. The funding was granted towards 145 new Academy Research Fellowships and 277 new Academy Projects (counted by subproject). The funded projects represent the international forefront of their respective disciplines and produce a broad range of new expertise for society at large.

The RCF's funding decisions are based on the results of international peer review. Peer review indicates the quality of the research in comparison to the international level in the field concerned. It allows the RCF to support the best projects and researchers and identify new research topics and perspectives.

The funding decisions focus on the quality and impact of research as well as on scientific renewal, and the funded projects funded aim to promote a wide range of innovative scientific research.

The competition for funding was fierce: The Academy Research Fellowship applicant success rate was around 13 per cent, compared to around 14 per cent for Academy Project applications.

The funding period for Academy Research Fellowships is four years, and the Academy Project funding is granted for a maximum of four years. The funding is granted to the host research organisations, which manage the use of the funding. The average funding for the four-year projects comes to 500,000 euros. Of this sum, 35–40 per cent goes towards the organisation’s overhead costs, such as rents, IT systems and administrative expenses.

In 2026, a total of approximately 527 million euros was allocated to the RCF in the state budget to fund new research projects and promote scientific research.

The RCF monitors the impact of funded research

The RCF is the key provider of competitive research funding in Finland. The RCF provides long-term funding for bold research ideas. Through free competition between investigator-driven research ideas, the RCF boosts innovative research and improves scientific expertise to benefit Finland and the world. According to the data dashboards describing the impact of RCF research funding, the scientific impact of RCF-funded research is clearly higher than on average in research conducted in Finland.
