Giving Reliable Machines a Longer Life: Remanufactured Diesel Engines on Display at FinnMETKO
26.8.2026 09:40:09 EEST | AGCO Power Oy | Press release
A remanufactured engine can return an ageing machine to productive use in just a few days and at roughly one-third lower cost than purchasing a new engine. Engines remanufactured to like-new condition at AGCO Power’s Linnavuori plant in Nokia, Finland, will be showcased at the FinnMETKO heavy machinery event in Jämsä in early September.

FinnMETKO offers a unique opportunity for diesel engine enthusiasts. At the AGCO Power stand, the remanufacturing process will be illustrated using three engine assemblies based on the same 49 CWA engine platform. The display will showcase different delivery options, ranging from a short block engine consisting of the cylinder block, crankshaft and pistons to a fully equipped and factory-tested replacement engine. The stand will also feature AGCO Power's new-generation CORE50 and CORE80 diesel engines.
Jussi Rinne, Director of Quality and Aftermarket at AGCO Power, emphasizes that a REMAN engine should not be compared to a conventional used engine or one rebuilt in a repair workshop. At the Linnavuori plant, used engines are completely disassembled and remanufactured to like-new condition in accordance with the factory’s quality processes. This allows AGCO Power to back remanufactured engines with a factory warranty. Remanufactured engines are available through the dealer and service network of the machine brand in question.
A key quality factor is that remanufacturing is carried out at the same engine plant where the engine was originally built. As a result, the engines are understood inside out. Quality is further enhanced by the fact that remanufacturing is entrusted to the plant’s most experienced technicians.
“Each engine is rebuilt from start to finish by a single technician. Typically, employees join our REMAN department after gaining extensive experience in new-engine production,” says Rinne.
Remanufactured Engine Reduces Machine Downtime
Replacing a tractor engine with a remanufactured unit is considerably faster than repairing the original engine. Repairing an existing engine requires disassembly, fault diagnosis, ordering replacement parts and carrying out the repair work itself.
With a remanufactured engine, a service appointment can be scheduled in advance, and the replacement engine is ready and waiting at the dealership or service centre on the agreed date. The engine swap can typically be completed within a few days. The removed engine is then sent to the factory for remanufacturing, after which it can be returned to service in another customer’s tractor.
Remanufacturing also supports circular economy principles by enabling many components from the original engine to be recovered and reused.
Visitors to the AGCO Power stand at FinnMETKO will be able to see the different remanufactured engine configurations available in practice. On display will be a short block engine, a long block engine, and a fully equipped replacement engine that has been factory-tested and is ready for installation.
“The REMAN engines showcased at FinnMETKO are examples of the actual delivery configurations we can offer our customers. A fully remanufactured engine also includes precision components matching the original engine specification, such as the fuel injection pump, injectors and turbocharger,” says Jussi Rinne.
All three REMAN engines on display have been remanufactured at AGCO Power’s Linnavuori plant. They are 4.9-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged 49 CWA diesel engines that were widely used in machines such as the Valtra N142 Versu and Direct models.
Like-New Warranty Coverage for Complete Replacement Engines
Rinne recommends choosing a complete, factory-tested replacement engine, particularly when the original engine has been in service for many years. Complete replacement engines are covered by a warranty of one year or 3,000 operating hours, while major components are covered by a warranty of 24 months or 5,000 operating hours.
“A long block is a good option when a relatively low-hour engine has suffered mechanical damage for some reason. However, if the turbocharger and fuel system also need to be replaced, a complete replacement engine is the more cost-effective solution,” advises Rinne.
Diesel engines have been manufactured at AGCO Power’s Linnavuori plant since the 1950s, and remanufactured replacement engines are still available for most of the models produced over the decades.
Linnavuori-built diesel engines have powered Valtra, Massey Ferguson, Fendt and Challenger tractors, a wide range of combine harvesters from Dronningborg to Sampo, as well as trains, vessels, port cranes, forestry machines, generators and countless other applications.
There are approximately 5,700 different engine variants, which have been produced over the years under the names Valmet Diesel, Sisu Diesel, AGCO Sisu Power and AGCO Power.
In addition to engines, the Linnavuori engine plant has been remanufacturing fuel injection equipment, injectors, turbochargers and other engine components for more than half a century.
New Fuel-Efficient CORE Engines Also on Display
In addition to remanufactured 49 CWA engines from the 2010s, visitors to FinnMETKO will also have the opportunity to explore AGCO Power’s latest diesel technology. On display will be the four-cylinder CORE50 (165 kW, 950 Nm) and the six-cylinder CORE80 (252 kW, 1,680 Nm). As their names suggest, the engines have displacements of five and eight litres, respectively.
Based on a low-speed engine concept, these new-generation diesel engines deliver high, fuel efficiency thanks to their high thermal efficiency, validated in independent DLG PowerMix tests conducted in Germany.
“Our focus has been on fuel economy and efficiency, but also on ensuring a fast response to changing load conditions. The engine reacts quickly to throttle inputs, and in the case of the CORE80, this is further enhanced by a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT),” says Markus Iivonen, Module Lead Engineer, Power & Energy at AGCO Power.
According to Iivonen, eliminating exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has both simplified the engine design and contributed to its low fuel consumption. Emissions are managed through an advanced exhaust aftertreatment system comprising a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) using AdBlue® diesel exhaust fluid.
“For tractor owners lower fuel consumption can contribute to lower operating costs and reduced carbon dioxide emissions associated with fuel use,” says Iivonen.
