World Premieres and New Voices in Sámi Music
18.9.2026 12:31:50 EEST | Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri | Press release
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s Encounters Club series shines a spotlight on the orchestra musicians’ own artistic projects, featuring world premieres and contemporary Sámi music during the 2026–2027 season.

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra’s Encounters Clubs invite audiences to unique musical evenings where orchestra musicians take center stage with their own artistic projects, chamber ensembles and collaborators. The 2026–2027 season highlights interdisciplinary encounters, new world premieres and a dialogue between traditional Sámi joik singing and classical music, featuring acclaimed joik artist Ánnámáret.
The season opens in September with Nachtmusik, curated by violinist Liam Mansfield. The programme includes the world premiere of Frecuencia Insular by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón. Written for string quartet and electronics, the work transports listeners into the nocturnal rainforest landscapes of the composer’s home island. The evening will also feature performances by the contemporary dance company PuskaBaletti.
Another world premiere follows in April when Klimatkvartetten joins forces with author Iida Turpeinen in Journey of the Sea Cow. The programme includes a new work by composer Outi Tarkiainen, written for Klimatkvartetten. The concert creates connections between literature, climate discourse and music.
In January, the Encounters Club turns its focus to Sámi culture. Featured guest Ánnámáret (Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman), one of the leading figures in contemporary Sámi music, brings new perspectives to the dialogue between joik and classical traditions.
The Encounters Clubs serve as a platform for Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra musicians to realize their individual artistic visions and present music, ideas and collaborations that may not fit within the format of a traditional symphony concert. Throughout the season, audiences will encounter chamber ensembles, dancers, writers, jazz musicians and a diverse range of guest artists.
The Encounters Clubs take place approximately once a month in the Music Centre’s Main Foyer after Friday evening concerts. Admission is free.
