The Roundhouse is inviting the city residents to join in celebrating light

The main halls of the Salo Art Museum Roundhouse will be filled with the Visit valo (Visit the Light) exhibition, showcasing light art in a multitude of ways. The exhibition works also extend outside of the museum walls, to the museum’s courtyard and the streets of Salo, and provide light in the darkening autumn days. At the same time, Gallery Sidetrack presents Sauli Suomela’s intensely colourful exhibition titled Layers / Kerrokset, including works that playfully explore with layers of materials and the transparency of surfaces and reflections.

The autumn exhibition at the Roundhouse is full of light art and colour splendour. The exhibitions opening in October illustrate, each in their own way, how light and colours yield in the artists’ hands and become interesting materials for pieces of art. The exhibitions explore the characteristics of light as well as spatial illusions which immerse the viewers observing them as part of the world created by the pieces. The exhibitions showcase an exceptionally large entity of works implemented using a variety of techniques, offering a diversity of things to see and experience for visitors of all ages.

Light art can also be encountered outside of the museum building and its surroundings around the city streets: artist Janne Parviainen’s light paintings can be seen in the light boxes  in front of the Salo main library, the community hall (Työväentalo) and station park (Asemapuisto).

Both exhibitions and the works outside can be viewed until 3 January 2027.

PROGRAMME

The opening of the autumn exhibitions at the Salo Art Museum Roundhouse will be celebrated in a public opening event on Friday, 2 October from 3 to 9pm. The museum has free admission during the event. In addition to the exhibition halls, there is programme and works of light art in the museum’s courtyard.

In the Roundhouse yard, you may run into Varpunen (sparrow), a bird that glistens in the evening dusk above the heads of the audience. The performance arranged by the Turku-based puppet group Aura of Puppets is an elegy to the familiar but also endangered sparrow, as well as a subtle statement for the diversity of nature.

• Performances in the museum courtyard at 5, 6, 7 and 8pm.
• The performance is family-friendly and lasts approximately 15 minutes. Subject to weather conditions.

The Metka café kiosk maintained by the youth services of the City of Salo is open from 3 to 8pm in the museum courtyard.

VISIT VALO, 3 October 2026–3 January 2027

As the season grows darker, the Roundhouse is diving into the exhilarating world of light art. The exhibition Visit valo (Visit the Light) presents a versatile selection of Finnish light art as works from current artists and as memories from past decades. The exhibition invites you to wonder and be charmed by the possibilities created by light as you stand next to the works created using a variety of techniques and styles.

The exhibition will display works from the following artists: Anna Alanko & Antton Nuotio, Petri Eskelinen, Helena Hietanen, Matti Kalkamo, Maija Lavonen, Pauliina Mäkelä, Janne Parviainen, Taneli Rautiainen, Eino Ruutsalo, Jere Suontausta and Kirsti Taiviola.

Gallery Sidetrack:
Sauli Suomela, LAYERS / KERROKSET, 3 October 2026–3 January 2027

The exhibition Layers / Kerrokset at Gallery Sidetrack invites visitors to engage in a playful dialogue between reflective and light-permeating surfaces. The study of materials, spaces and colours forms the starting point for Helsinki-based designer and visual artist Sauli Suomela’s (b. 1969) artistic approach. Suomela’s glass-inspired artworks have been created by casting layers of epoxy resin coloured with pigments onto different materials. The works in the exhibition invite the viewers to observe both themselves and their surroundings with curiosity: reflections and the movement of light constantly shape the appearance of the works, when seen from different angles and directions, the colours of the works are blended and layered in new compositions at every glance.
