The development of Rovaniemi Airport continues: new traffic and parking arrangements have been implemented

”We started the development of areas for passenger cars and buses in spring 2025 as part of the expansion project of the departures hall. The aim of the work has been to further develop the customer experience, which is already at a high level at Rovaniemi Airport. The work in the ground traffic areas was scheduled for two years so that it could be carried out outside the busiest travel season of the winter season,” says Johan Juujärvi, Finavia's Airport Manager at Rovaniemi Airport.

In the alteration project, a completely new parking area of approximately 4,000 square metres was built in front of the airport for the long-term parking needs of 130 passenger cars. The area primarily serves passengers who arrive at the airport by car. In addition, a separate bus area designed specifically for bus traffic was built in the area. The new bus area has parking spaces for 16 buses. As a result of the development work, the area reserved for private cars, buses and taxis almost doubled to a total of approximately 19,000 square metres.  

In connection with the expansion project of the departure hall carried out in 2025, a completely separate area was created next to the airport’s main entrance for the drop-off traffic of departing passengers. With this year’s changes, there are also separate areas for those meeting arriving passengers and taxis, which improves the flow of traffic and the safety of pedestrians.

In the future, car rental companies will operate from the parking area at the end of the passenger terminal. There are currently eight car rental points operating at Rovaniemi Airport, and they are located inside the terminal.

Minor finishing and adjustment works will be carried out in the new areas over the coming weeks.

Taxi services at Rovaniemi Airport

Several taxi companies operate at Rovaniemi Airport. Through public tendering, Finavia has concluded agreements with Taksi Rovaniemi, Lähitaksi Rovaniemi and Menevä on the provision of taxi services. The tendering practice is also valid at several other Finavia airports.

With tendering, the airports are able to ensure that taxis are available during the busiest travel months and the quietest summer months.

”Taxi service tendering is one way to develop the customer experience and customer satisfaction at airports. Contract taxis operate in their own area in front of the terminal, while other taxi companies operate in their own area. The arrangement improves the customer experience of passengers, as taxis are available whenever they are needed,” says Johan Juujärvi.

The tendering does not deny taxi companies without an agreement the opportunity to pick up and drop off passengers at the airport. Passengers will continue to be free to choose the taxi company they wish to use.
