HUS will start using Suomi.fi messages on October 26, 2026. From that date onward, letters to patients over the age of 18 are delivered to Maisa, Suomi.fi messages, or OmaPosti. Patients who have not enabled electronic services will continue to receive paper letters.

HUS will start sending messages through Suomi.fi on Month October 26, 2026. From that date onward, letters to adult patients are delivered to Maisa, Suomi.fi messages, or OmaPosti. Patients who have not activated any electronic services will continue to receive paper letters.
Patient letters are primarily delivered through Maisa, which also provides access to other health information.

Starting on October 26, 2026, HUS will begin delivering patient letters for adult patients electronically. The primary delivery channel is Maisa, which also provides access to other health information.

If a patient has not activated Maisa, the letter will be delivered to their Suomi.fi messages or OmaPosti. If the patient has not activated electronic letters in Maisa, the letter will be delivered to Suomi.fi messages or OmaPosti in addition to Maisa. If the patient does not use any of these electronic services, the letter will be sent as paper mail.

If the patient has enabled text messages in Maisa, they will receive a text message about an appointment booking and a reminder two days before the appointment.

This change in the delivery method of patient letters does not apply to persons under guardianship or persons with a valid continuing power of attorney, underage patients, or client invoices. Depending on the patient’s choice, invoices will be sent as e-invoices, through OmaPosti or direct payment, or by mail.

Electronic letters offer many benefits

Electronic letters are convenient to access without the delays associated with paper mail. They also help reduce mailing costs and conserve the environment.

Switching to electronic letters is part of a nationwide shift towards digital communications by the authorities.

“We expect the change to generate significant savings. We estimate that the number of paper letters will be reduced by half, resulting in savings of more than one million euros. These funds can be redirected to carrying out HUS’ core task, which is treating patients,” says Administrative Chief Medical Officer Teppo Heikkilä.

HUS website has instructions on how to enable electronic letters and text message reminders in Maisa (https://www.hus.fi/en/e-services).
