CIVIS Media Prize 2022 – competition now open! / Closing date: 19 January 2022

The competition for the European CIVIS Media Prize is now open. European programmes on addressing migration, integration, cultural diversity and – linked to this – social cohesion can be submitted up to and including 19 January 2022. The CIVIS Media Prize honours outstanding TV, radio and online productions that promote peaceful coexistence between people from different geographic and cultural backgrounds.

The CIVIS Awards are presented in four fields and in various categories:

  • VIDEO AWARD: Non-fiction programmes, fiction programmes and social media formats (moving images)
  • AUDIO AWARD: Short programmes of up to six minutes, long programmes over six minutes and podcasts
  • YOUNG C. AWARD (films, age restriction applies)
  • CINEMA AWARD (audience award)

The CIVIS TOP AWARD is an additional prize honouring the best production of the year in the AUDIO, VIDEO and YOUNG C. categories. No direct candidatures can be entered for the CIVIS TOP AWARD.

The total prize money is € 27,000.

The CIVIS Media Prize is sponsored by ARD, represented by WDR, together with the Freudenberg Foundation. ORF, SRG SSR, RTV Slovenia, ARTE, 3sat, phoenix, Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandradio and EBU are media partners. The Federal Government Commissioner for Integration, WDR mediagroup, the German Producers Alliance – Film & Television, VFF Verwertungsgesellschaft der Film- und Fernsehproduzenten and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) are cooperation partners.

The non-profit CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Cologne is responsible for organising the competition, jury meetings and award ceremony.

The European CIVIS Media Prize aims to encourage media professionals to deal with topics of migration, integration, cultural diversity and social cohesion in a creative, constructive and, where necessary, (self) critical way.

21.05.2021 Cologne | The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2021 have been announced. The main prize of €15,000, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the podcast Rice and Shine | Hamburg 1980: Als der rechte Terror wieder aufflammte by the authors Minh Thu Tran and Vanessa Vu. The podcast addresses the arson attack on a refugee shelter in Hamburg, in which two young men from Vietnam died in August 1980. The production also picks up the podcast audience prize CIVIS AUDIO AWARD Podcast. Anja Buwert and Thilo Mischke receive the prize in the category of VIDEO AWARD/Information for ProSieben Spezial. CIVIS Media Prize 2021 – The 23 nominees of what is Europe's most important media prize when it comes to integration and cultural diversity have been selected: Candidates for the CIVIS Media Prize include entries from ARTE, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, FYEO, HBO, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, Österreichischer Rundfunk, ProSieben, Radio Bremen, Saarländischer Rundfunk, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, Südwestrundfunk, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and ZDF. The productions deal with highly topical issues such as flight, racism, right-wing extremism and antisemitism in many different ways; however, they also cover strategies against hate and violence as well as strategies for the peaceful coexistence of people with diverse geographical and cultural origins. Nearly 800 productions from television, radio and the Internet were submitted for the CIVIS Competition 2021. They came from 20 EU states and Switzerland.

Cologne – The winners of the European CIVIS Media Prize for Integration and Cultural Diversity 2020 have been announced. The main prize of €15,000, the CIVIS TOP AWARD, goes to the director and screenwriter Arkadij Khaet for his film “Masel Tov Cocktail”, which was produced by Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, SWR and ARTE. The 29-year-old Khaet had already picked up the CIVIS Media Prize in the YOUNG C. category. His film deals with a Jewish boy’s search for identity in Germany.

Over 900 programmes from 22 EU states and Switzerland have entered the CIVIS Competition 2020. They deal with subjects such as fleeing to Europe, racism and antisemitism in many different ways; however, they also cover strategies against hate and violence and the promotion of the peaceful coexistence of people with diverse geographical and cultural origins. ARTE, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Deutschlandfunk and France Télévisions have nominated programmes – as well as Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, Österreichischer Rundfunk and Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen.
