This is FINLAND Magazine 2023–2024: Discovering the source of a good life
“Aimed at international audiences, This is FINLAND Magazine provides an insight into what life is like in Finland today, from investigating extensive digital services and superb food innovations to exploring critically acclaimed cinema and great cultural events. For instance, I am delighted that director Alli Haapasalo, who gained international recognition for her film Girl Picture (Finnish: Tytöt tytöt tytöt), was able to talk to us about her work,” says Laura Kamras, Director of the Unit for Public Diplomacy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
“Finland’s nature, along with climate change issues, feature prominently in articles such as photographer Meeri Koutaniemi's story of how Finnish forests can become a source of energy and renewal. Our focus is on how Finland is showing by example that climate goals, no matter how ambitious, can be achieved,” Kamras says.
Part of the 'This is FINLAND' country brand family, promoted across several channels, the Magazine targets an international readership. In the section uncovering what work means in Finland, Jamie Hyneman, Professor of Practice at LUT University in Lappeenranta, offers a taster of Finnish work culture. Known for his contribution to the television series Mythbusters, Hyneman says he appreciates Finnish perseverance, 'sisu', and honesty. Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen provides inspiring thoughts on how we could reflect on future work and ways to organise it. “Some of us like to work as freelancers, while others would prefer a stable employment relationship. But diversity plays a key role in both,” he says in the Magazine interview.
This year's edition also discusses Finland's goal of carbon neutrality by 2035, which requires not only an increase in energy efficiency but also the contribution of businesses and international partnerships. With Finnish metaverse builders, readers get a glimpse of digital services designed to help families cope with daily life. “Metaverse is still breaking new ground, but it is clear that businesses can see its potential,” says Miikka Rosendahl, founder and CEO of ZOAN.
The adverse side of the digital transformation, such as cyber threats and disinformation, are also on the agenda. Columnist Julia Alajärvi from KAVI, the National Audiovisual Institute, discusses media literacy, which is part of the curriculum at Finnish schools. “When people have good media literacy skills, it is harder to influence them by means of disinformation or to make them act against their own interests,” she says.
This is FINLAND Magazine is published by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Business Finland and The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. It is distributed globally using the channels available to the editorial board, including the Finnish missions abroad.
