Virtual conference on smart city development in Tampere, Finland – keynote speakers include Pertti Lukander of Nokia Bell Labs and Khalil Rouhana of the European Commission

The keynote speakers of the event include Pertti Lukander, leader of Nokia Bell Labs research organisation, Khalil Rouhana of the European Commission and Piia Karjalainen, Senior Manager for Mobility, of MaaS Alliance. 

- We have put together a very broad overview of what is currently happening in urban development in Finland and abroad. Themes include different areas of society, varying from safety and security to health and from education to mobility. I would say that the programme offers something familiar to everyone and new perspectives as food for thought, says Seppo Haataja, Director of the Smart Tampere ecosystem programme, of Business Tampere.

Tampere, Finland is a pioneer in smart cities

Smart city development often goes undetected, but through versatile research and development work, the everyday life of citizens runs smoother and easier. With the COVID-19 pandemic, development work has taken a big leap forward. The Tampere Smart City Week conference presents how our society and city have adapted to the current situation.  

Tampere has developed very rapidly in recent years, so the city is a good venue for the conference. For example, the development of mobility solutions, various ambitious construction projects, pursuit of carbon neutrality and internationally significant research in many fields have put Tampere at the forefront of smart city development in the Nordic countries.

- Tampere is an excellent smart city. We have extensive and diverse networks, an active business field and internationally significant research. Here, smart city development is carried out with the broad-based involvement of various societal operators, varying from companies to educational institutions and from the city’s organisation to individual Tampere citizens, says Teppo Rantanen, Executive Director of economic policy, competitiveness and innovation, of the City of Tampere.

The event is organised by the City of Tampere. The main partners of the conference are Business Tampere, Business Finland, VTT, Deloitte and Tampere University.
