Daniel Buren: Going for a Walk in a Zigzag 2.3.–17.7.2022

Daniel Buren (b. 1938) is a French artist whose oeuvre has revolved around the themes of transience, site specificity, and the boundary-pushing critique of art institutions in a career now spanning six decades. Buren is famous for his practice of using 8.7 cm-wide vertical stripes as a visual tool to reveal hidden aspects of familiar spaces.

The centrepiece of the EMMA exhibitionis a unique, expansive in situ piece called Les Paravents (Folding Screens). Buren will offer visitors an unprecedented experience by inviting them to step inside a zig-zagging maze and immerse themselves in an endless play of colour and reflections. The piece draws inspiration from the museum’s open, horizontal space and its 100-metre-wide window. Alongside this new site-specific work, the exhibition will offer an overview of classic works from throughout Buren’s extensive career. The exhibition will also spill outside the walls of the museum with a line-up of open-air events and attractions.
